Playback is a question that often comes up when discussing Metacorder. While
it is certainly easy enough to playback a file with Metacorder, it is
probably best to delegate playback to another program.

While helping a new Metacorder/Mackie/Mac customer with their setup
yesterday, we downloaded "Audacity" (basically a free version of Soundforge
and Audition) to demonstrate using the computer for music playback
productions. Audacity displays the recording's wave form and supports
instant re-cuing to any cue point.

With Metacorder and Audacity open, we recorded tracks with Metacorder, then
played them back with Audacity while, at the same time, recording another
track with Metacorder.

Practical applications of this magic include on-set ADR, and playing back
music tracks for lip sync while recording dialog, all with the same
computer.

Of course, this has been done for years now in the studio, but it is very
cool to have a practical, inexpensive means to do it on location.

Both are Mac applications.

In Audacity, you can also adjust the sample rate to do speed changes
for playback pull up/down. It will read Deva files up to 4 tracks (it
may be 6 tracks). No timecode unless you use an audio track. Nice
little program.

Opps, I guess it will read other non-linear reocrders too. BWF,P

Hi Frank,

Yes, both programs were running at the same time on the same computer.
Metacorder was recording and Audacity was playing back. Both were using the
internal hard drive.

I should add that Metacorder was recording to the Mac's internal hard drive,
while at the same time recording to an external USB2 drive, while at the
same time Audacity was playing back a track from the Mac's internal hard
drive.

What was the sound I/O configuration? Metacorder through the Mackie?
Audacity through the Built-in audio?
Peter
PS Congratulations Glen, and welcome to the Mac world. (Took you long

Glenn you make some good points about the use of the laptops on set. I
think we will all be starting to see a lot more of them very soon. And
judging by the size of some of the new laptops i've seen from Sony,
they are becoming a more attractive option.

The Mackie's do seem to be a great match to the Metacorder. I was
wondering if anyone could way in with some opinions about the Mackie vs
The MOTU Traveler ?

In the case described above, the interface for Metacorder (inputs and return
monitoring) was the Mackie Onyx 1620. The more familiar I get with this
combination the more I find to like about it. For timecode, we used a
Denecke Syncbox into the Mac's line input, which is a selectable option in
the Metacorder screen.

For playing back from the Mac with the Audacity program, we used the Mac's
internal sound card, and just played back through the headphone amplifier.
May not seem very sophisticated, but this output will drive an amplifier's
line input just fine. I've done it the same way during productions without a
hitch (and even with a PC)

Peter, before you and Jeff open the campaign Champaign, I'm afraid that the
only bonafide reason other than peer pressure I've found to choose Mac over
PC is that Metacorder will only work on a Mac (and, according to Gallery,
that will not change). I'll concede that Mac has the market cornered in the
"cute" department (bouncing icons, hip pimp names, etc), but I'd rather have
it write DVD-RAMs with an internal drive like my Dell does.

Otherwise, the operation of the two platforms is so similar, that my disdain
for platform incompatibility is just reinforced.

This could be just another laughing matter, but it affects sound mixers in a
negative way. For example, Metacorder is written only for Mac, and the
Lectrosonics Venue interface is written only for Windows 2000 or XP. Both
programs will soon become common place for sound carts. But to use both, the
only two options are either to have two computers on the cart or run Virtual
PC (another $299) on your Mac. Both solutions will work, but neither is a
very good option. Probably the simplest answer for those using Metacorder
and Venue (and these numbers will be increasing) is for someone at Lectro to
write a version of the Venue interface for Mac.

Larry F., can you bail Apple out for us?

Hi Don,

In my opinion, the Mackie Onyx mixer series, in particular the 1620 is an
amazing value for what it offers, especially when paired with the Metacorder
for multitrack production sound recording. Not only does it provide high
quality audio to a host of analog outputs, but it also accomodates 18
channels plus returns via a single Firewire cable. The Onyx goes a little
further than previous Mackies in that it also has an off-line talkback
circuit. If you sacrifice a couple of the four AUX channels, you can rig a
very nice, full duplex, private 2-way intercom between the mixer and two
boom operators.

The Firewire port sends up to 16 input channels (post trim, pre-fader) plus
2 mix buss channels, to up to 18 individual tracks on the Metacorder. There
are always numerous questions about the limitations of pre-fader outputs
(many assume it takes the mixing part away from recordingi). However, I feel
strongly that iso tracks should always be prefader, and should always be
accompanied by a mono mix track.

One possibly valid concern about the Mackie is that the direct outs are not
only pre-fader, but also pre EQ. But, I'll go out on a limb here and say
that this will more often be a bennefit than a problem.
