Well, every time I start wondering if Keaton and Lloyd are more
compatible with modern tastes than Chaplin, I get a surprise.

Last Sunday I visited Palo Alto's Stanford Theater for the first
time in years, to catch a matinee of a Constance Talmadge-Ronald Colman
silent. Before the show, I couldn't help overhearing a conversation a
couple rows behind me, between a high school girl and an older lady.

The girl was talking about the classic stars she loved, like Garbo
and Dressler, but she said her favorite was Chaplin. She's got most of
his films on video, and part of one wall at home is covered in Chaplin
photos (her "shrine," she laughed).

So there's always hope.
