I think O'Briens weserns for RKO were super with slightly better stories
than the average "cowboy movie". And I dont say this because I worked
for RKO.

Do you take Films of the Golden Age or Classic Images? (same publisher)
I think they had an O'Brien story sometime back they could send you a
copy of

Robert Saxton.

His son Darcy wrote a lovely novel based on his mother's life called "Margaret
in Hollywood." It's available at a lot of places. I also think there's a nice
section on George in Scott Eyman's John Ford book.

Darcy O'Brien's "A Way of Life Like Any Other" is also based on his parents'
lives, although I really have no idea how much of it is fiction. O'Brien
was a very good writer. Has there ever been a biography or a biographical
article written on George O'Brien?

George O'Brien was a fine actor and a fine person and I knew him.

He was good in both silent and sound films.

I can suggest one of his sound Westerns released by Fox ('35)
WHEN A MAN'S A MAN (a/k/a SAGA OF THE WEST) as one of his best.
Two other very good ones are also WHISPERING SMITH SPEAKS and
DUDE RANGER. These sometimes turn up on cable TV or VHS video and
can be found.

Did you know Darcy O'Brien? His description of his childhood in A Way of
Life, etc. was quite vivid, but as I said I don't really know what was true
and what wasn't. It was fiction, after all.

Dem's fightin' words in this house. O'Brien's silent output alone
puts him into the class as one of the all time greats.

I'm already ripping off my shirt in preparation for the inevitable barroom
brawl.

Although I'm more suited to THE BLACK PIRATE, as we both have sunken chests.

but do you own that bizarrely homoerotic leather harness the navy boys use
to "swim" to the rescue at the end of the film?

Hi Frederica,

I never met Darcy but did know George's daughter Orin and I hope she is well
and still pursuing her career in music.

George was a nice person and a great personality. At my house we always
enjoy visiting with him when we run his old films on 16MM or Videotape.

Best,

Sam Sherman

(much wonderful stuff snipped)

you have no idea how envious I am right now. Just another reminder I was
born a good 10 to 20 to 70 years too late.

And I supposed if I heard about it and "really" wanted to go - I *could*
have made that Cinecon.

*sigh*
