Picked this up Sept 5th, and I am very disappointed in the picture
quality. Grainy with scratches and dots through the whole picture. The
2 guys giving the audio commentary said this is the best print? I have
a bootleg copy and the picture is crystal clear. What gives??

I agree.

The official Toho region 2 dvd released several years ago is far better
looking than this newest release. Even the old Japanese remastered laserdisc
from the early 90's used a much better looking print. Also, not only is the
print Classic Media used pretty scratched up, but it appears they simply
bumped up the contrast and black levels to the limit to try and make it look
better, but all that happened was that a lot of subtle detail is now washed
out. In the scenes when Godzilla first attacks Tokyo around the scene he
wrecks the train, you can hardly make out Godzilla at all in the long shots,
something the viewer has no problem doing on the old laserdisc or R2 dvd
releases.

I'd guess Toho as usual is handicapping CM by giving them an inferior print
to prevent this release which is priced far lower than the still-in-print R2
dvd from hurting their sales in Japan.

Very disappointed and this doesn't bode well for the quality of some of the
other upcoming Godzilla dvd releases.
