Just tried to watch the "Good Shepherd" (2006) directed by DeNiro.
Not so good. Even though it had Angelina Jolie, who is my sole
reason for living, I could not sit through it, not even running
much of it at 3X. It was still too slow at 3X. I had to give up
two-thirds of the way through. Matt Damon is like a store manikin.
Dead from the neck down, and the neck up. And between the ears.

I loved "The Good Shepherd". I watched it immediately the day I bought it,
then watched it again with subtitles to catch quiet parts I'd missed.
Watched it again the next day and the day after. Then I watched it again
that weekend with my wife, who falls asleep halfway during every movie. She
stayed awake the entire time and liked it too.
As for Angelina, she now joins Robin Wright-Penn in my book as an actress I
really like but absolutely hate a particular character (Robin as Jenny and
Angelina's TGS wife), which I guess is a sign of a good actress. Or are
they all called "actors" now, regardless of gender?

I'm glad for Robert DeNiro's sake that somebody liked the "Good
Shepherd." He's a nice guy and a terrific actor. He's even a
pretty good director, although other factors in his film made it
unappealing to me -- the characters were too flat, there wasn't
enough action, it jumped around in time too much, the characters
were not likable (except for the elderly professor who was
murdered), the story was confused, the editing of the film could
have been tighter, it was too long for its subject.
I prefer the term "actress" myself. Words that differentiate
gender make our language richer and more colorful. It would be a
shame to lose them to political correctness.

I finally got Good Shepherd at Hollywood Video. Our local theater
judged it not kiddy enough to merit showing. My biggest complaint was
lack of subtitles. Even with my home earphones and hearing aids it was
difficult to understand. Matt Damon's depiction of a CIA agent was
somebody's idea of what one should act like. So we'd know he was a
spook. See, spies are not supposed to act like spies. You are not
supposed to able to tell them from average people. See, otherwise
they'd be pretty easy to pick out and eliminate. What part of my
reasoning is so difficult for Hollywood to grasp? The movie did depict
some of the intelligence world's cold nasty pragmatism accurately, I
think.
