Hi there, does anyone know what kind of lens works well for shooting
miniatures, such as spaceship miniatures, miniature buildings etc? I
need to know what I could use that would the miniatures look huge
instead of looking like little models. This info is needed for both
super 8 and 16mm. Thanks.

Hey Mog,

You would probably want to go telephoto because that gives you the
narrowest depth of field, which is what you want for the sake of size
simulation. Also there is a calculation (I can't recall it now, sorry)
that is required to figure out film speed... yes you must over crank.
With a wide open iris.

Good luck,

Yot

OK, from me, you'll get advice, not anti-advice. ;)

Wide depth of field is the thing. Stay as wide as you can short of
distortion beyond what you're willing to allow. Narrow aperture is also key
to wide depth of field, so pour just as much light on your model as is
practical.

When shooting miniature landscapes, use as low a filming angle as possible.
You might even slope the edge of a tabletop miniature downward towards the
edge just to get the lens an inch or two lower. Stop and consider that on
your miniature, being a foot or two up might correspond to being several
tens of feet in the air, and most shots are not made from the tops of tall
towers.
