I'm about to buy a new Sony 76 cm widescreen TV, whilst it is HD capable, at
this stage I am opting to just get an SD STB and wait until the HD ones are
cheaper.

However, I do have $350 - $450 or so to spend on a STB, and was hoping I
could get something of quite good quality for that price. My question is
what is recommended at this price range? Previously on my old TV I have been
using a $200 XMS brand which as done a job, but I want something of higher
quality for my new TV. I need something with component input, and dual
tuners would be nice so I could tape something, and watch something else at
the same time. Other than that I'm unsure what features to look for.
Obviously the TV I am getting is nearly $3000, so I want something that can
do it justice.

I'd prefer a good quality SD, rather than the cheapest HD going.

Any ideas?

Teac make good little SD units. Considering you are a Sony boy, you may
not like the idea of buying a Teac unit, but they have shown that they
make pretty good STB products and support them well (ie firmware updates
and responding on dba forums). As a bonus they are < $300.
