Hello

So I just won a NJB3 on eBay as a start to getting decent recording
gear on a budget.

I'm pretty set on the Sound Devices MixPre which I can buy locally for
$650CDN. As for the mic, I was recommened the Sennheiser K6 as a good
starter for under $1000CDN (think $800US). I would be using this to
build a sound library at the moment, but it should still be good enough
quality to use for work purposes as well until I can afford something
much better. Changeable capsules would be preferred.
Is anyone using the AKG ULS or Blue Line? Has anyone compared the
quality between these and the K6 line? What other brands/mics might I
look at?

Thank you,
JarrettH

What will you be using this sound gear for?

The K6 is a Sennheiser mic preamp. Omni, cardoid, hypercardoid and
shotgun capsules are available. What patterns will you be needing.
The cost for the K6 and one capsule is approx $400-450 . You should be
able to get this well under $1000 Canadian

I have both the K6 ME66 & 67 as well as the Blue line hyper and short
gun. I find that I like the sound of the AKG's better but that the 66
& 67 have better reach. So I use the AKG except when I need real long
reach.

The Sound Devices Premix is an excellent little 2:2 mixer, I have used
it in the past cascaded into an SQN to give me a couple of extra
channels, It's full of features, robust, easy to use and worth every
penny!

As for Mics, (especially if you are after a shotgun) I'd say try and
pick up a second hand Sennheiser MKH416P (the pre mix will only power
phantom) They are pretty indestructible, even in very damp conditions
(I used one in the rain forest for 4 weeks with no problems) which is
why I guess there the industry standard in the UK. They may not be the
best sounding in the world, but for the money and the durability, your
quid’s in! To reduce costs, you could always use a Rycote softie and
Pistol grip instead of a full suspension, basket and wind jammer
(fluffy)

Best Regards,
Henry

I like the sound of the Blue Line better than the K6.

I like the sound of the C451-460-ULS _way_ better than the Blue Line.

Be aware the K6/ME66 is 15 dB hotter than the others. This won't make a
difference with the SD mixer, but if you're feeding a miniDV cam directly
it can significantly improve the s/n... if the camera can handle it.

The C460B's are widely available used for $250-300 (with a cardioid capsule.) If you get lucky, you can sometimes find them with the CK63 hypecardioid capsule which otherwise adds $220 or so to your cost. Keep your eues open for a used CK69 shotgun kit (which gives you both long and short shotguns in one setup.)

When you get more money, you can have Audio Upgrades work over the C460B electronics and you will have a mic that sounds better than the C480B.

Are they still in biz..... I see the website as still up but awhile
back I tried to reach them numerous times and got no response at the
phone number on their site. In fact I think the phone was
disconnected.

They had done good work for me in the past if someone knows more
please let me know.

Thanks,
