This is one of those silly what-if games.

The idea is to switch Cary Grant and James Stewart in their Hitchcock
films. There are some that you just can't imagine (Grant in Vertigo?)
Some that feel weird at first but are fascinating to consider (Stewart
in Suspicion or Notorious), and some that might have been pretty good
the other way.(Stewart in N x NW, Grant in The Man Who Knew Too Much)

Your thoughts?

Don't think it'd work it most cases. Completely different styles.

Often wondered about the mental gymnastics Hitchcock had to go through
when he was told that he couldn't have his first choice for the Rupert
Cadell character in _ROPE_ . Hitchcock wanted Charles Laughton. The
studio said he had to use James Stewart!

How about Grant in _Rear Window_?

The concept sure doesn't work well in "The Philadelphia Story."

Urgh...

Stewart wins. Grant at his best played Thornhill in "North by Northwest".
Almost too suave to get dust on his suit.
Stewart was far more capable emotionally, and I think more effective
with dialogue.

Stone me.

I picked that as a "not work" example. Someone else picked trading
them in _Philadelphia Story_ as a "not work".

I really can't see any of the switcheroos working - Stewart in _TO
CATCH A THIEF_? I don't think so.

The quote from Hitch was "Grant for action, Stewart for reaction."
But he did try to get Stewart for "North by Northwest"; he reckoned
that Stewart's name on the marque was worth more--he named an exact
figure--in ticket sales, particularly in the midwest. It would have
been a different movie, more like "Saboteur"; with Stewart more of a
wronged innocent and less of a heel. That "because of men like you"
line wouldn't have worked.
