Assuming that the standalone version follows the same template as the one
I saw in "Grindhouse", then I think the basic plot structure is flawed,
and could not be saved whenever it is purported to be set. (In fact, I had
no problem with the 2007-ness of DP, while I had a major problem with the
2007 setting of "Planet Terror").
In my mind the total unconnectedness of the two halves sabotages
the movie. If the second set of girls had some tie to the first
set, if the sheriff who seemed to know what was going on had
interevened in some way to set things up, then the second set of
girls whaling on Russell would have been satisfying. Also, even
considered on its own, the second half had too few power reversals.
After Russell had the initial upper hand, the girls asserted dominance
too soon and with none of the sequence of reversals needed for a
really good thrill ride.
