I really wanted to love Death Proof. It' looks great, it has the right kind
of music, Kurt Russell is perfect, and the women are wonderfully swanky.
The problem is that DP is a seventies film set in 2007, and it just doesn't
work. Also there is way to much dialog and most of it is at best annoying.

I tried watching Death Proof thinking there might be big differences
between the DVD cut and the Grindhouse version but all it was was
longer. The premise--to make a feminist exploitation thriller and
show how much Quentin is down with the ladies--was tired to begin
with. What makes Death Proof more depressing than most major director
misfires is that Tarantino's playing his strengths here--dialogue,
characterization, pulp trashiness--and it all falls so flat it's
barely watchable.

Assuming that the standalone version follows the same template as the one
I saw in "Grindhouse", then I think the basic plot structure is flawed,
and could not be saved whenever it is purported to be set. (In fact, I had
no problem with the 2007-ness of DP, while I had a major problem with the
2007 setting of "Planet Terror").

In my mind the total unconnectedness of the two halves sabotages
the movie. If the second set of girls had some tie to the first
set, if the sheriff who seemed to know what was going on had
interevened in some way to set things up, then the second set of
girls whaling on Russell would have been satisfying. Also, even
considered on its own, the second half had too few power reversals.
After Russell had the initial upper hand, the girls asserted dominance
too soon and with none of the sequence of reversals needed for a
really good thrill ride.

I actually thought it WAS set in the 70's....until one of the women
opened her cellphone, then I was like WTF?

So how bad is PROOF? - PROOF got a lot of bad reviews, particularly for the leading actress' limited abilities. Is it that bad?
