I usually hang out on the rec.arts.anime.misc board, and was informed that
the review of Ratatouille was crossposted to a couple of other boards.
Figuring that I'm probably new to you, and you're certainly new to me, I
thought I would at least introduce myself and say hi.

I am a movie geek, but with an odder focus than most. For example, I very
much enjoy the bad ones (sort of. Nothing could put a positive spin on
Evan Almighty, but Battlefield Earth was a total hoot). My taste literally
run all across the board. I can enjoy the artsy as well as the mainstream.
I can appreciate refined comedy making statements as easily as I can enjoy
"Meatballs" and "Caddyshack". I try to keep an open mind, as I'm never
sure from one moment to the next what I will like. I loved "The Black
Hole" as a kid, in my teen years didn't think much of it, and now it's back
to being a sci-fi favorite of mine. Just warning you to expect
inconsistencies as far as my tastes go.

So, long story short, I hope to see all of you around, and I look forward to
jawwing with you all.

My tastes have changed a lot over the past few years (don't know if they've
gotten better or worse). Right now I'm kind of going through a
post-apocalyptic phase, watching films such as The Omega Man and Logan's
Run. I had no idea Will Smith's new movie was from the same material as The
Omega Man, so when I'm watching the trailer on the dvd for Omega Man, I was
thinking that the new Will Smith film sure seemed to be ripping off this
movie. Then I did the research and.....I'm also reading Logan's Run right
now, and so far I think the movie was probably an improvement on the source
material.

I like The Black Hole. I still dig Tron as well, though I think a remake
would probably be better than the original, as the film is quite flawed with
a lackluster soundtrack that keeps the film from really zipping along. I
still like The Dark Crystal, and am hopeful that the sequel (due next year)
will be as good as the original.

I grew up with the post-apocalyptic phase of the 80's. Seemed like a lot of
people who wanted to make barbarian movies but didn't want to sift through
all the mythology. Not that I blame them. I did notice that production of
such films reached a fever pitch during the Reagan era (not trying to be
political, just making an observation) and seemed to die out when he left.
I also noticed the production of those films from the Reagan era was
noticably lacking (Amerika 3000, Robot Holocaust).

Tron I have an on-and-off relationship with. On the one hand, I dig it, but
then, the plot seems like a retread of the old Resistance war movies
(complete with donning the "uniform" of the enemy to blend in). I also
loved the soundtrack and pounced on the CD when it was rereleased. It's
not as good as The Black Hole's soundtrack. The title music, with its
mariner style (I love how the high flutes in the background rise and swell
as the trombone gives it oomph) is better, and, IIRC, the first movie
soundtrack to be digitally recorded.

Wasn't much of a Dark Crystal fan. Medieval fantasy has never quite been my
bag. As much as I thought the Lord Of The Rings movies were fun, I didn't
quite see the big deal about them. Then again, I'm a Pokemon nut, and I'm
very sure it's viewed the exact same way by others. A little perspective,
you know?

Conan and mad max are guilty pleasures for me...are they reagan era?
Not sure.

Watching them makes me feel like a kid again though.

We bought Labyrinth and that for our kids recently. Must pass on the
tradition.
