OK, am I the only one to admit to it? Last night's CBS crime show
"Criminal Minds" used, as intro and outtro, scenes from "A Night in
the Show." Basic story line was that perps get away with crimes
against the homeless and transients because they are not seen or given
respect as being fully human.

The head FBI dude said that his grandfather was somehow connected with
Essanay in Chicago where at one time, "a quarter of all movies were
made." They ended the show with a voice-over quote attributed to
Chaplin that "nothing is permanant, not even our problems."

Actually I watch _Criminal MInds_ from time to time, but I didn't
see that one except for a glimpse of a rather lurid scene while I
was making dinner. I like _CSI_, but _Criminal Minds_ is a bit
too gruesome and humorless for my taste.

I don't know if Chaplin said that in exactly those words, but it
sounds a bit like
Shadov's advice to Rupert in _A King in New York_, and in the Vreeland
interview
I referred to in another post, Chaplin says, "Nothing in life is
lasting or important"
(p. 56).

But I don't believe that Essanay had 16mm safety film prints to give
away to
former employees when the company went under. :-)
