From the first release to dealers, a shipment of Portadrives have just
arrived and I have just had an initial feel of my machine.

The build quality is superb and the visual monitoring for system,
signal levels and signal paths is stunning.
My feeling is that the case and the controls are a far better build
quality than we have seen from DAT recorder manufacturers in the recent
past. All the XLR connectors are Neutrik with gold plated connectors
and the supplied case is a good quality canvas one.

Virtually the same size as a Nagra 4.2 (that sits neglected nearby)
but I will have to spend a few hours absorbing the operation manual
and learning the menus before I can offer further comments.

To be purely emotional, it has an air of quiet confidence about it
and I can't wait to hear it start speaking to me!

Regards to all

Very exciting news Mike. Hope you enjoy it, but I'm sure someone will try to
take the air out of your sails.

Come on Roberto, competition is a good thing for any
manufacturer to improve their product and sharpen their pencils.

Let's face it, there are at least 3 good brands of radio mikes,
5 good brands of microphones, 4 good brands of mixers, and
a plethora or personal mikes for the industry to choose from.

The application, the price and individual details as well as
reputation decides what people will buy.

So lets celebrate this range of options we face and that
so many skilled designers have slaved to present!

Kind regards

oi !

My first wonder was, how does the screen on top works/feels ? It seems
like a good idea to have it there, but i wondered how the "learning
curve/touch"' is.

And, what is the Rec non lock stand in the Rec/stop button ?

R ( the only con point i could find after a hard search was the SCSI,
and i understood ( from some UK Source :-) ) that the USB port is not
for Data )

The screen on top is like a small laptop display which indicates the
8 areas of setting up the machine. It is very clear and intuitive
and I expect that the learning curve is rather like getting to
understand the PD-2 menus but more like using music software
with virtual faders apearing on the screen which move when you
adjust the level knobs - for example.

> And, what is the Rec non lock stand in the Rec/stop button ?

The Stop Lock position of the transport switch locks the all the panel
controls leaving only the transport switch and the headphone level
control functional.
The Record Lock does exactly the same but you are in record.

The SCSI allows interface with the optional DVD backup unit or other
form of data storage. The HHB DVD backup unit is supplied with software,
and works from 12/18 volts DC.

The USB2 interface is described as being used for downloading OS software
updates and "allows the transfer of data to and from a computer.

One factor that I have been wondering about is the ability to use
the Portadrive as an 8 track recorder as I have an 8 channel
Sonosax and for music recording it seems a ideal pairing.
Although the Portadrive has only 6 mic/line inputs, tracks 7 & 8
can be fed by line sources from the 2 channel return (5 pin XLR) or
from AES inputs on a 25 pin SubD connector.

My learning curve continues!

Ehhh, i think this is one example of my bad-English.
What is ment was that i would not take any wind out of any sails,
sorry for this misunderstanding.

Thanks Tom,

I believe the release of these first 40 machines to dealers
is on the basis that we have beta software and that we await
the updates.

Kind regards

Sounds like a fair deal. Updates is the new magic word with these HD
recorders. Let's hope all these mfg's keep Updating the software for a
long while, instead of the hardware :-)

Also, the External burner on the SCSI, can that also be a DVD - or + R
instead of a DVD RAM burner ?
( it will need another driver , i guess )

How's is the power use, how is the TC stability, all that stuff, and ,
very important, how does it sound ?

Hi Roberto,

DVD burner is defined as use with a PC, being for
DVDRAM,DVD-R,DVDRW,CD-R,CDRW depending on software used

Power, with supplied 50 watt Lithion battery 2 hours of constant use

TC stability is 1.0ppm

Sound, well I will admit I have not got that far yet as I'm still
working my way through the menus etc

Did you measure it ? And when you switch it on and Off, or change
batteries ?

It's defined in the manual as that.
