With all the wonderful restorations of classic films that
have taken place in the past few years, what is holding
this title back....?

There must be better quality materials available than
what has been used in the past....

Is there anything in the works for a reissue of this title
on DVD...?

To the best of my knowledge, the only suriving print was a 16mm Universal
show-at-home print, which fathered all subsequent prints.

That's the going tale,...I just cant believe that GEH and other
archives all possess the same 16mm print.....

Is there a roadshow version of this print,...? or are all the
existing prints identical to the Show at Home print...?

This is true, Yet this year we have seen THE MAN WHO LAUGHS in a
wonderful restored print. PHANTOM, METROPOLIS, and even
NOSFERATU (once doomed to prints that were from Nth generation
materials).

February will see the reissue of THE CAT AND THE CANARY in a
new 35mm print.

So why is an important film like HUNCHBACK left wanting..?

Prints of HUNCHBACK exist at MOMA, GEH, and archives in
Sweden, Brussels and Italy.

Surely we could hope to see this title issued from a new master,
not the same worn 16mm print that has been massaged to the point it
becomes a blur of its former self.

with an orchestral score that respects and compliments the film.
(spoon bangers and dodecaphonic wannabes need not apply )

It'd be nice if there was 35mm footage to work from. If you blow up a
16mm, it's essentially still a 16mm quality print.

This is not neccisarily a BAD thing-- But the condition of these prints
which were run DOZENS of times in the last century not to mention the
fact that the negatives being used to strike them were already worn
beyond belief from the 35mm general run makes the end result still
messy.

As far as I know, UCLA has an ongoing restoration of this as well as
PHANTOM, which also deserves the same amount of treatment.

Seeing as there were as many as four scores compiled for the film, a
guide for a good orchestral score is not hard to find and good
orchestral scores have been achieved in the past.
