Archived from groups: rec>arts>movies>production>sound (more info?)

I had a strange problem for the first time with this camera today.
When shooting on P2 cards, we got a low-level digital clicking sound
on both channels, maybe six clicks per second. The click was very
regular and made me think it was a clock or timecode issue. The noise
was not present when rolling to miniDV, but the production couldn't be
persuaded to change media (heh). Double system is not an option for
these guys at the moment (budget).

I don't have a sample to upload, but I'm trying to get one. My ears
tell me this isn't going to be hard to take out in post, but I have
yet to hear the evidence.

My guess is that the camera is one of the more beat-up rentals and I
shouldn't worry too hard about this. If anyone's experienced
something similar, though, I'd love to hear about it.

I've heard this using a lectro plug on.

That's interesting . . so far it's happened with a hardwired 416 to
channels 1+2, and with a Lectro and Sennheiser wireless to 1 and 2
respectively. What happened with the plug-on?

Do you have anything hooked up to the multipin HD out of the camera
(like a monitor)? I've had cables connected to this port pick up RF,
specifically radar etc. Are they using a firestore device as well?

I have no direct experience, but my son has warned me that this has
happened to him WHEN RECORDING WITH THE P2 CARD IN SLOT 1. And that
apparently the clocking noise doesn't happen if the same card is
placed into the slot 2 position. Neither of us has had the
opportunity to check it out in any detail - only in the midst of
trying to get good sound on a shoot. I can only wonder that if Slot
1 of every HVX-200 does indeed have an interference problem, is it
only on the monitor return part of the circuitry, or does that
clocking sound actually get into the recorded file. Does it happen
every time on all generations of the camera and P2 cards...or is it
just an occasional fluke?

I do sound for three different local production companies to the HVX P2
system. I haven't experienced any clicking to any of the cameras. One of
the company's HVXs was acquired in the first week on the market and another
purchased theirs about two months ago. So they run the gamut from very old
to very new.

Are you mixing with a digital mixer when this happens?

I believe I also heard this on a shoot last week. New-ish HVX-200
recording to P2. Sounded like a faint, electric stopwatch, if there
were such a thing. I told the director about it (his camera) and let
him listen. He didn't hear it and I was rolling backup to a 702T so I
moved on.

I had this happen also on a recent gig. 2 hvx200's being feed by
zaxcoms. It only appeared on 1 camera. I had thought it was the
Zaxcom(rental), but clearly that was not the issue. We were rolling
double system, so we didn't bother tracking it down thoroughly. The
noise WAS recorded in my instance. But not all the time. Which I
originally thought it was RF issues, since it didn't happen all the
time. Same clicking sound, very fast. If anyone wants to hear it,
shoot me an email, and I'll send you something short.

Yet another reason to keep our recorders working, and not trust
cameras to record our audio:)

Exciting news! Soundriven's (or his son's) advice turned out to be
spot on. The HVX I shot on today actually had both issues described
here - the rapid clicking as well as a high-pitched beep. Now that I
think of it, the high-pitched beep was present on the 16GB card and
the clicking was on the 8GBs. I haven't heard back from the first
project on whether it's showed up in FCP yet.

Both issues were resolved by putting the P2 card in slot 2. Reminds
me of how mysterious PCI card issues could sometimes be resolved by
switching them to a different slot on the motherboard (PC users,
anyone?).

The DP's theory is that it's an error with the new drivers everyone's
just had to install in order to use the 16GB cards. He said he knew
someone to at Panasonic he could notify, so maybe we'll get some
feedback.

Thank you all, and especially Soundriven - I owe you all a drink. Let
me know if you're ever in NY!

To follow-up, my son and I were talking some more today about this
issue, and he was wondering if the camera-mic-to-channels-3-and-4
default that engages when one selects any of the HD formats is somehow
the source of the noises we hear on the monitor return when using slot
1? But that wouldn't fully explain how the noises might get recorded
onto audio channels 1 & 2 - as they apparently do. Too bad none of us
mere sound guys seem to have our very own HVX-200 to play with when
we're not out on an actual shoot...otherwise it would be a very simple
matter to chase down the source of the problem and the solution.

In any case, I would listen carefully to the return and try Slot 2 if
you hear anything nasty...until the issue is addressed out by
panasonic.

Of the clip I recently heard, the noise that I described was only on
CH 1. Most likely on CH 2 also, but it was TC, and I can't tell. CH
3&4 clean.

Has anyone heard this noise on recorded tracks 1 or 2 when the P2
files are imported into Final Cut or wherever? I suspect that there
is maybe no fault with the camera (as far as this goes), and the noise
is what amounts to camera noise recorded on tracks 3 and 4 that is
picked up legitimately by the onboard stereo mic (according to the
manual, in all HD modes on this camera, the input for 3 and 4 default
to onboard camera mic l and r).

Has anyone been able to hear this noise after recording on tracks 1 or
2, or is it possible that it is on 3 and 4 only? Just an idea. It
could explain why it only appears on slot 1 (the card reader is
physically closer to the onboard mic).

I have found a clip that has nothing but the noise. Both at the same
time. The fast paced clicking and the somewhat random beeping, and
there's hissssss, and other noises. No external audio was recorded, so
all you hear is the noise. Ugly! There's more there then you think!
