Decided to switch gears from all the big-budget summer action
blockbusters and check out the "Hairspray" movie musical, and I was
very pleasantly surprised by how great it was. My review:

Guys, be forewarned: this is a musical, so you'll most likely be
outnumbered by legions of crazed teenage girls in the theater (I
certainly was) who are fans of "High School Musical" (one of HSM's
stars is in Hairspray). But if you're OK with that, you're in for a
real treat. One of the most fun times I've had in the theater. The
high-energy singing, dancing, and choreography are all top-notch. And
John Travolta was flat-out hilarious in drag. I highly recommend it;
you'll feel like singing and dancing all the way home from the
theater. :)

But then, any movie that gets HSM fans to see more than one other
*actual* Broadway musical in their lives is creating a public service
for the next generation.

And hopefully, it'll get us out of the slump we've had with the Broadway
Movie Renaissance:
"Chicago" won the Oscar, yes, but "Rent" was depressing, "Phantom" was
claustrophobic, "Producers" was overbearing, and "Dreamgirls" didn't get
the Picture nomination it was hoping for.

Now that stage producers are starting to smell movie projects again
(which's part of what killed it off in the 80's), the biggest worry is
whether it'll be over before it starts--
We've still got "Aida" and "Mamma Mia" to finish, and it's not like
those're going to jumpstart genres singlehandedly.

I'm very interested to see what Tim Burton does with 'Sweeney Todd'...

Never saw HSM myself (As a 30-something male, I'm both the wrong age
and gender for it) but I heard virtually every teenage girl in America
has bought the DVD. It's *that* big a phenomenon, from what I've
read.

Oh, BTW, didn't mean to generalize about Hairspray's audience demo; in
other theaters, there could have been more men and older people
overall in the audience, but the one I was in, women outnumbered men
more than 2 to 1, most of them around high-school age. Didn't stop
my enjoyment of the musical, but I did have to put up with shouts like
"that Zac guy's so CUTE!" behind me every other minute. Think Harry
Potter squared. :)

I had to sit through the video for reasons beyond my control, and...any
suspicions about why teens like HSM is correct:
Exactly the same as any other Disney Channel programming (think "'Saved
By the Bell' in E flat") and an entire "lost generation" born since 1982
has literally never seen a movie musical in their lives. -_-
(So, for those of you from that generation, don't tell me you weren't
thinking the same "Best musical ever"'s about the Buffy episode...
Or can you still watch "Moulin Rouge" today without a
what-was-I-thinking cringe?)

On one of our Disney boards, we older folk who can find the Classics
section of the Blockbusters used to tweak HSM tweenies with "Oh, hey,
there's this thing called 'Grease' I saw the other day...And these
things called 'Fame' and 'West Side Story', they looked like they were
worth checking out!"
And every one would get completely believing responses of "Oh, Grease,
we saw that last week, that was so kewl!"
(Oh, lordy.) -_-

For above mentioned reasons, we can be glad the casting producers made
the HSM connection to "sucker" that badly-needed generation in by their
one cheap leash--
Change won't happen overnight, it must be a slow evolution of awareness,
but we have to take it step by step.
