Archived from groups: uk>media>films (more info?)

I am looking for something to watch for Halloween. I note with interest
that, from some of what I've read, the Japanese and other Asian markets
easily outstrip the US Hollywood monopoly when it comes to class horror. I
have read reviews of The Eye, The Audition, and, of course, the original
Ring.

This kind of deeply disturbing, psych-horror, that the east seems to do so
much better than the west, is pretty much what I'm after for Halloween,
something challenging. The Audition, in particular, sounds enthrawling.

But here's the thing. I don't much enjoy watching subtitled films. I have
a little tunnel-vision, and it means that my attention is drawn away from
the film by reading the subtitles.

So here's the challenge, can anyone think of an English language horror that
goes in for the same kind of serious head-messing as some of these
notoriously challenging eastern films? And I'm not talking Ring remakes
here, I saw that god-awful effort and laughed myself to sleep for months.

Any ideas?
