Channel surfing today I came across TCM's showing of The Milky Way and a scene
where Harold is standing next to Adolphe Menjou. Menjou seemed to have an inch
or so on him.

I was always under the impression Menjou was relatively short...

So is Harold. 5'8" I think I read in the Vance book. What is it with
short comedians: Buster at 5'5" and Harold at 5'8" leaves me wondering
how tall Charlie was.

Chaplin was 5'5" as well. People were shorter then. Slim Summerville,
who seemed like such a giant, was only 6'2", slightly above average
height today. Mack Swain was only 6'1", which meant he towered over
Chaplin.

If Richard Roberts were around in those days he could have played the title role
in DER GOLEM....r

Here in Phoenix, it is a given that anyone who is mounting a stage
production of ARSENIC AND OLD LACE will contact Richard to
inquire as to his availability to play Jonathan Brewster.

I've seen slightly different accounts of Buster's and Chaplin's heights.
According to one source I read, Buster was 5'4", and according to Chaplin's son
Charlie Jr., Chaplin was 5'6 1/2". This seems relatively about right, since
in pictures of Charlie and Buster together, Charlie looks about 2" taller.
In some accounts, Chaplin was only 5'4", but I doubt that this is accurate.

Chaplin wasn't that short compared to many other men in the 'teens and
'twenties, as is evident in group pictures, but he liked to make himself
look smaller by hiring big men as foils. He was very slender, however.

People seem to have an attitude that all men must be at least 6 feet tall,
or they're sub-normal. But most male performers are shorter than that. In
Hollywood, a star's height is harder to come by than his age, which many
fabricate anyway.

But look at famous dancers. Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire were only about 5
ft. 8 in., and Mikhail Barishnykov is 5 ft. 7 in. "Short" male dancers are
the norm, because I guess it takes a compact body to perform gracefully.
Dan Dailey and Tommy Tune are the exceptions that prove the rule.

Someone once pointed out (I wish I knew where) something that just
about qualifies as the Unified Field Theory of stardom: the average
person has a head to body ratio of about 1:6 (meaning your head is 1/6
of your total height) but movie stars average closer to 1:5-- in other
words, short but with big heads and, often, big expressive eyes,
that's what works on screen. (Even the tall ones have big heads, ie,
John Wayne.)

In other other words, very similar to cartoon characters. If someone
who looked like Ben Affleck was born with four fingers and white
gloves on each hand, they'd be even more perfect for the movies.

I was once looking through some old photographs with a dance historian,
and he pointed out two individuals. One had a large head and large dark
eyes on a small square body. The other had a small head on a long slender
body. The second dancer looked at least a head taller that the first, but
a picture of them together showed them to be almost the same heighth.
