Please Help identify this movie

Here is how I remember it:

A young doctor is waiting on the platform to catch his train home.
The platform is deserted except for one other very distressed
looking gentleman. When the doctor asks the man if he is ok, the
man freaks out, saying that he is going to jump in front of the next
train and end it all. He says that he is being followed by a demon, and
that each day the demon gets a little closer to him and is now almost
upon him. He says he can hear its mocking laughter.

The doctor tries to stop the man from committing suicide, but does not
succeed. After the doctor has given his report to the police he
heads home. As he is walking along he becomes aware of footsteps
some way behind him, he looks but there is no one there. He starts
to run, but the footsteps keep pace with him. They follow him home.
Over the next few days the sound of the footsteps keep getting
closer to him and he starts to hear the sound of childlike laughter.

He goes to see a colleague and good friend of his. His friend tells
him that he is just feeling guilty because he was unable to save the
man at the train station, but the young doctor is not convinced. He
eventually becomes more and more crazed by this torment and has in the
end accepted the fact that the demon is real, and he is its next
victim. As the sound of this thing now indicates that it is standing
just behind him, he decides to prevent his demise at its hands by
taking his own life; I think he jumps off a high building or something
like that. His distressed friend and colleague witnesses the doctors
death after failing to prevent it. And as this guy heads home, guess
what, he can hear footsteps following at some distance behind him.

Well, I can't help you with the name of the film, but it was clearly based on
the short story "Footsteps Invisible" by Robert Arthur.
