We do the same.

We've wired the stero out from our TV to the DVD input channel on the
A/V amp. When the DVD player is on the amp selects the digital audio
as there's a signal. When the DVD is off (well, in standby) the amp
selects stero signal from the TV. Even less switching to do! It does
need an A/V amp that will auto select a digital signal if there is one
and fall back to analogue if not though.

I have a Panasonix SXR15 which (I believe) does auto detect which out of the
digital signals is present (2 out of possible 3 - 2x opt & 1x coax)
So a Pace DT210F with digital out would be a good one.

For what I want to do. I connect the DVD digital out to the DVD in
(digital connection )on the A/V amp and the TV (or STB) ANALOGUE out to
the same DVD in (analogue connection) on the A/V amp. Thus when the DVD
is off the amp will select the analogue sound signal from the TV (or
STB) and when the DVD is on the amp will select the digital sound signal
from the DVD.
