I ran a two receivers (UCR 200D and a UCR 205D) in a bag today for 9
continuous hours. The receivers got very hot. I was using a lithium
ion NP1 that is 16 V when fully charged, but this should be fine with
the receivers. Since there are 4 receivers stacked together there is
little ventilation.

Does anyone arrange his (her) gear for better ventilation? Mine lives
in a Portabrace bag, and the dividers between each receiver is like a
tiny blanket.

My 200d ran very hot even when I did my best to ventilate.
The obvious overheating never affected it's good performance in the 4 years
I used it but I traded it in just in case...

I think if you dug WAY back in the RAMPS posting, you would find Larry
saying that indeed they run hot...very hot at times,but in all of their
testing, those units have never failed due to heat.

Just like David, that is one reason I got rid of the 200D and moved on
up.

You might shoot Charlie Tomaras a note...I think he uses five or so
205's all the time.

The UCR200's were dandy hand warmers. They also generated more heat as
the supply voltage went up since they used all linear regulators. In a
bag, I would recommend a small spacer between each unit and the next,
even a quarter inch will allow much more air circulation around the
units. I don't know of any heat related failures. The biggest drawback
to the UCR200's was the battery drain (400mA ea) on a bag or camera
system. The 205's and all later units had switching regualtors and
have had increasingly higher gas mileage. The UCR200 never met a Joule
that it didn't like.

The 200 receivers run very hot. I used to have 4 of them sandwiched together
with Velcro and the Velcro would melt free. I use 4 205's sandwiched between
two UDM modules all connected by velcro and have not heat issues.

Charles, I"ve had the same experience. 200's Velcroed together in a
bag will melt the glue leaving a sticky mess on the receivers that
takes a couple of bottles of Goo Gone to clean up. I used to stack my
200's on my cart with Velcro, and with full ventilation on 4 sides they
got rather toasty after 10 or 12 hours. I'm still using 200's but now
line them up side by side on the cart for full ventilation except on
the bottom. I appreciate Larry's comment that 200's don't fail because
of heat -- but, I might add, they've filled a few graveyards with
batteries. Kudos to Lectrosonics, I've used 200's since 1999 and they
still sound great, a real workhorse. Newer rf's are a few db quieter,
but with news and reality and electronic field production, background
noise almost always masks any mic/xmitter/recvr noise. I was on a
shoot recently where I complained about HMI ballast noise, and I got
excellent cooperation from the electrics. When the HD camera rolled,
it was louder than the ballasts!

So it goes.

Terry

For reference, here are some current draw figures for Lectro Receivers:

UCR411 = 180ma
UCR401 = 180ma
UCR211 = 130ma
UCR210D = 130ma
UCR200D = 400ma
UCR205D = 260ma
UCR201 = 100ma
UCR195D = 140ma
UCR190 = 60ma-70ma
CR187 = 55ma

Thanks to all who commented. Very helpful indeed.

It is odd that I have owned these units for seven years and not
encountered the heater syndrone before now. The two 200D's and two
205D's lived in Lectro's single rack space quad kit until the Venue
VRT arrived. With Venue on the cart, I moved the 200Ds and the 205Ds
to a bag.

During the few times in the past when I used the receivers in a bag, I
only used the 205s because they used less power. Running the 200Ds in
a bag with Lithium Ion batteries (16V when fully charged) was quite the
surprise!

I loved Larry's "never met a Joule it didn't love" line. Larry,
Consider it stolen.

Thanks,
David Terry

Hi David,
Two reasons why you never noticed it before. The major reason is that
in the rack mount everything was spread out and the heat was
dissipating efficiently. In a bag the units are insulated from open
air on 3 to 5 sides of the 6 possible surfaces that can get rid of
heat. A secondary reason is that the lithium ion batteries probably
have a higher voltage and with linear supplies as in the UCR200, heat
is proportional to voltage. 205's onward have switchers and the heat
load is independent of supply voltage.
