I'm about to buy and build a new HTPC setup, but one thing has just
come to mind!

Whenever I have installed XP or MCE to SATA, you have to F6 and
provide the installation with SATA drivers from a floppy drive.

Obviously there is no floppy drive (or port on the MB I will be using)
so curious how to get round this problem?

Anyone know?

without slipstreaming the install disk, you will have to have a floppy at
least for the install.

I take that back - it seems it does have one - but doesnt change my
opinion on XP/MCE/Vista for not including the drivers on the
installation disc.

Never had to use a floppy to install a SATA drive. You need to press F6 to
install RAID drivers via floppy but not SATA.

If you are not having a RAID setup you do not need a floppy!

Use a USB floppy, works fine. £9 from Ebuyer.

Or use Vista that allows driver installation from CD/DVD.

Correct, no floppy needed when I build my last pc with 4 SATA drives
(1x250GB 3x400GB) I just let XP format the drive and install.

When I installed to my 2 kids machines a year ago, using a floppy was
the only way. Without it, it *didn't* see the SATA drives.

Reading elsewhere, it suggests to use RAID drivers even if you are not
going to be using Raid! (I cant figure that out either!)

Anyway - Ive slipstreamed with nLite the SATA drivers, so hopefully
all will be fine.

I think you are missing the point! I shouldnt have to buy a defunct
floppy drive or buy Vista!

It all depends on the motherboard you've got and how the SATA connectors
are rigged up....

On my main rig (A8N-SLI Premium) I don't need SATA drivers to get it
running, but on an MSI board that runs as a file server I have to use them.

YMMV and all that jazz though.

Not correct. XP sp2 has built into it *some* sata drivers.
