I've got 16 Ipower 9volt batteries in circulation right now. They are
doing a great job reducing the trash output of the sound dept. As
well as cutting down on our expendables budget which is what the
company really seems to care about...

I have run into some issues however. One of the initial two charges
that I purchased was very unpredictable and never worked right. That
was replaced quickly and all was fine. I purchased more batteries and
one more charger. We are using comteks and UM transmitters on these
batteries as I write.

One battery seems to charge properly and show green. Upon taking it
off the charger, you have a 50/50 chance of the battery showing no
actual voltage...none at all. When you put it in anything, it wont
work. You can meter it and it will be 0.00. When you put it back on
the charger it will show green. If you take it off the charger, it
often shows full voltage. I just went through this and am now
watching it work totally fine in a UM250.

Could this be the battery? Or the charger?

Anyone have similar issues or difficulties with the IPower batteries?

Thanks,
PWP

Hi Phillip ,

I have exactly the same problems . I , like you thought I was doing
the right thing for the environment by using these yet I have about a
50% failure rate with them , showing charged but not giving any
voltage . Though one good thing is that they last longer in a Lectro
IFB than a alkaline , that is when you find one that works .

I had one of four do the same thing. Sent it in and received a
replacement. All four work fine now.

I have twelve and only one gives me issues. I have been using them
for about a year now and love them. Think of all the chemical waste
you are not producing by reusing the same cells.

1 out of 8 with the same problem here, sent it back & get a
replacement...

Thanks everyone. This is the information I needed. I'll swap out the
battery today. Now I know what to look for if things start behaving
badly with these batteries. When they work, they work great...but
they have put me in a couple of REALLY bad situations over the last
couple of weeks. It has made me and my crew VERY nervous to use them,
but I'm going to give it more time.

Hi Philip,
The protection circuitry is disconnecting the battery in error. The
battery electronics are defective and the battery should be replaced.

I have had occasional issues with regular non rechargeable lithium batteries
being duds as well. When I am in a critical situation where the transmitter
has to work for a long time without intervention, I usually burn the
transmitter for 10 or 15 minutes before hand to make sure I don't have a
battery failure.

We at Trew Audio have heard of this happening recently, seemingly at
random, but enough to realize that something is going on. Since the
reports started coming in this summer I'm wondering if it could be
heat related, either in the charger or the battery. So far, iPower
doesn't seem to think so, but the timing still makes me wonder. Are
there known instances of this happening in environments that would
disprove the heat related theory (interiors only, constant controlled
cool temps...)?

Thanks,

Glen Trew

Yep... The last several times this happened to us we were on stage.
Air conditioning and low humidity. I don't think it's heat related.

I'm talking about Ipower 9volts. The last 2 times it has happened has
been on stage, air conditioning...not a hot enviornment.

I just want to point out how glad I am that nobody has chimed in and
said not to use rechargeable batteries. Some months ago I posted here
how important it is we change our battery consumption, but people
seemed to think that our business is "too important" to use
rechargeables. While nobody likes the idea of risking blowing a take
or fussing with battery changes on difficult actors, it's really
critical that we change our thinking and realize that we must make
this change. Actors don't want to be seen as un-green, so might
embrace more frequent changes.

I use almost exclusively rechargeable batteries at home and at work.
The iPower 9v are great. My experience has been that bad ones are bad
to begin with, so I have them replaced by the retailer. I have not
had any issues past that stage. Sometimes the chargers act a little
funny, but I always test the batteries after pulling them off.

AA/AAA rechargeables are also very good. I have found that the
Duracells are better than the Energizers. I use them in slates,
clockits, and SM's. I have also bought some "hybrid" AA
rechargeables, yet to be tested, that are supposed to hold their
charge longer while stored. This is nice, but I always top off my
batteries before sending them out on an actor anyway.

I am proud to produce less waste, and I think it's great that more of
us are switching from the disposable to the reusable mentality. Bring
your own coffee cups to work or your coffee shop is another good step!

On video shoots lately I try not to waste tone. I only give them one channel
for 20 seconds instead of two for 30. I've got enough spare tone saved up
that I've encoded it as MP3 and have hours and hours of the stuff which I
can listen to on those long flights.

In all seriousness, I also feel better about my use of rechargeable but I
won't admit it to the people I work for as I'm still charging them for their
use. I feel it's fair but I doubt they would see it that way as they don't
pay me for my NP1's nor do they pay camera owner operators for their bricks.
