Kevin Smith carries on the tradition
of silent comedy as one half of this
duo. Perspecacious critics agree.

Although I am a fan of Kevin Smith, and especially of his near-perfect
romantic comedy "Chasing Amy" (1997), I have to disagree with you and the
other "perspecacious" (sp?) critics.

I think you mean perspicacious.

Carrying "on the tradition of silent comedy" requires a lot more than just
acting dumb and not talking. I would agree with you that Kevin Smith is one
talented hombre... but his Silent Bob is not funny in the inspired tradition
of Chaplin, Lloyd, Keaton, Arbuckle, or Langdon. He's just quiet.

Agree with you about "Chasing Amy."
Silent Bob does only a cameo
in that one. Yet SB has done some
physical comedy in the other films,
especially JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK, so maybe ole Frippo
has a point for once.

After watching J&SBSB, Dogma, and other Smith films I decided the duo
are a modern-day stoner version of Harpo and Chico. Replace Harpo's
raincoat and plug hat with SB's trenchcoat and backwards ballcap, and
Chico's "Italian" accent with Jay's goofy venacular and there you have
it!

Exactly on target!

But Smith says he's dropping the characters after STRIKES BACK.

OT comment:

(I think Kevin Smith along with M. Night
Shyamalan are the only 2 young American directors who are true
"auteurs," i.e
with a real personal vision. Both segregate themselves from Hollywood,
Smith in Red Bank, NJ, Shyamalan in
the Philadelphia suburbs...is there a
message there?)

Yes, there you have it. But the Marx Brothers were not silent comedy.

I really can't believe someone just mentioned Silent Bob and Ben Turpin the
same thread. I'm not saying it's bad, I just never thought it would happen.

Is it that you never thought it would happen or you thought it would
never happen? If the latter, you've got a lot of time on your hands.

On the other hand he writes some very good comic books.

(Actually he does.)

I don't know.
Does Kevin Smith have a funny walk
unique to him? Does he pratfall on cue?
Has he ever caught a pie in the face?
Is he an acrobat? These are the "traditions
of silent comedy" that I'm familiar with.

And I've just seen his new film JERSEY GIRL, which is his first
"mainstream" picture. It's absoutely tremendous and will vault him to
a whole new level.

you failed to do that, Banky, you are in breach of the original

Arguably. As an illustration of the opposite career track, there's Joe
Carnahan, who directed the terrific, gritty, personal, low-budget NARC, and is
now rumored to be directing MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 3. Ugh.

Clarification please. Why do you say "Ugh?" Does that snort refer to
Carnahan, to NARC, or to MISSION IMPOSSIBLE? From your message it's
impossible to tell.
