Why the Jews did not and could not have killed Jesus!

Jesus arrived at the Temple smashing tables of vendors and driving the
money-changers out. The Jews who wanted these services were outraged as
Christians would be today if someone were to storm into their churches
during Easter services, smashing candles and crosses offered for sale. Does
anyone doubt that such an intruder would be arrested at this time? The Jews
did not arrest Jesus at this time. They wanted no trouble with the Romans
and hoped the incident would pass.

But...news of this got the Romans upset. The adherents of Jesus were now
speaking openly calling him "king of the Jews" and "the messiah", further
arousing suspicious Romans. The Jews, according to the Gospels, arrested
Jesus on the third day after his appearance at the Temple.

Twelve eventful hours now took place. This account was written 40 to 90
years after the event itself. The Gospel accounts say this: Jesus was
arrested at night by orders of the Sanhedrin, the highest court in the land.
And condemned to death by the court for the crime of blasphemy at the palace
of the High Priest with the aid of witnesses. The Gospel then goes on to
state that Pontius Pilate, who approved the sentence, did so reluctantly
because he was afraid of the Jewish multitude.

Any person familiar with Jewish judicial procedure in Biblical times will
find it difficult to take the Gospel accounts literally.

According to Jewish law at that time, no one could be arrested at night. It
was illegal to hold court proceedings after sundown on the eve or the day of
the Sabbath or a festival. The Sanhedrin (high court) could convene only in
the Chamber of Hewn Stones, never in the palace of the High Priest. Nor
could the high court initiate an arrest. The Talmud decreed that even as a
condemned man was led to his place of execution, a herald had to precede him
crying out what he is accused of and giving witnesses a chance to rebuttal
the accusations.

These facts make it very unlikely that a Jewish High Court would defy every
law in its own code and act contrary to time-honored custom. Such an action
of the Sanhedrin would be the same as the U.S. Supreme Court seizing a man
at night, searching for immediate witnesses during the night to accuse him
of the crime and then condemn him to death without a trial - all within the
space of 12 hours.

Does it seem more probable that Jesus was arrested by the Jews to protect
him from the Romans? And that the protective arrested was to no avail and
that the Romans demanded that the Jews turn Jesus over to them for
punishment?
According to the Gospels it was the Roman soldiers who tortured the body of
Jesus. It took Roman fiendishness, not Jewish compassion, to press a crown
of thorns on his head,

The Gospels themselves relate that it was the Jewish multitude that wept at
the scene of his crucifixion, not the Romans who were busy playing dice at
the time.

Jews, never in their history crucified anybody. In fact, the Jews came out
in defense of the Christians as evidenced in the New Testament itself.
