I recall seeing Cagney in a black and white war picture, about twenty or so
years ago. He played a Marine in WWII, playing cat-and-mouse with a Japanese
soldier. I don't think I got it confused with Hell in the Pacific--that was
in color and had different actors. Cagney had a running dialog through the
movie with himself, and with the enemy soldier, for whom he had a nickname.
I think Cagney was the only actor--and that showed how good he was, that he
could keep the viewer's attention all by himself. It could have been for TV
(Twilight Zone or something) and I'll check that out in some of our
library's TV books. Does anybody else remember this part for Cagey? I'd like
to see that again. Thanks.

I can't recall any feature Cagney movie that fits that description but
(just a guess) could it possibly be "Soldier from the War Returning"
go here :-

"Soldiers from the War Returning" was a live TV drama on "Robert Montgomery
Presents" (Cagney and Montgomery were old pals, hence Jimmy's willingness to
make his only dramatic appearance on live TV), consisting mainly of a
monologue delivered by Cagney, playing a soldier who must break the news to
a woman that her son has died in the war. I don't know if it's readily
available on VHS or DVD, but it might be worth seeing, inasmuch as at one
point, Cagney reportedly forgot his lines and went silent for nearly thirty
seconds, compelling the director to improvise with tight closeups of Cagney
and the confused actress playing the mother.

There was a another live drama (possibly on PLAYHOUSE 90) titled "The See is
Boiling Hot", which aired circa 1958, featuring Earl Holliman as a Marine
and Sessue Hayakawa in the nonspeaking role of a Japanese soldier. Thus,
Holliman had all the lines. Could this be what you're thinking of ?(yes, I
know Cagney's not in it!)

Otherwise, Cagney had some nice cat-and-mouse scenes with several Japanese
characters in BLOOD ON THE SUN (1945), which was set in Tokyo before Pearl
Harbor. This is the one in which he squares off against an opponent in a
judo match. However, Cagney played a reporter, not a Marine.

Say...this isn't much help to you at all, is it? Sorry.

Thank you both. I'll keep looking. Wonder if I could find those TV shows
somehow? At the library today I checked with the reference books and
Cagney's 1983 autobiography, which has a filmography. I thought too that I
could be remembering a scene from The Fighting 69th--wrong war, but same
actor. I'll check that out as well. Cagney has a good box set coming in a
few weeks from Warner Home Video. Has anybody read Cagney's autobiography,
by the way ? It looks like he has two--one from 1976 and one from 1983.
