"Soldiers from the War Returning" was a live TV drama on "Robert Montgomery
Presents" (Cagney and Montgomery were old pals, hence Jimmy's willingness to
make his only dramatic appearance on live TV), consisting mainly of a
monologue delivered by Cagney, playing a soldier who must break the news to
a woman that her son has died in the war. I don't know if it's readily
available on VHS or DVD, but it might be worth seeing, inasmuch as at one
point, Cagney reportedly forgot his lines and went silent for nearly thirty
seconds, compelling the director to improvise with tight closeups of Cagney
and the confused actress playing the mother.
There was a another live drama (possibly on PLAYHOUSE 90) titled "The See is
Boiling Hot", which aired circa 1958, featuring Earl Holliman as a Marine
and Sessue Hayakawa in the nonspeaking role of a Japanese soldier. Thus,
Holliman had all the lines. Could this be what you're thinking of ?(yes, I
know Cagney's not in it!)
Otherwise, Cagney had some nice cat-and-mouse scenes with several Japanese
characters in BLOOD ON THE SUN (1945), which was set in Tokyo before Pearl
Harbor. This is the one in which he squares off against an opponent in a
judo match. However, Cagney played a reporter, not a Marine.
Say...this isn't much help to you at all, is it? Sorry.
