Just a quick note of celebration -- early animation historian (Felix
the Cat, Winsor McCay, many books on Disney) John Canemaker won the
Oscar for Best Animated Short Film on Sunday.

Yes, I was happy about that too, although it kind of made me wish that
Oscar had a category, or an honorary award, or something for people who
WRITE about movies. I mean, really, who does Hollywood owe more to for
its being so legendary and glamorous, some producer who wins the
Thalberg or....

"And the Oscar goes to... Kevin Brownlow, for Behind the Mask of
Innocence!"

Only one problem-- you don't have to be a member to be nominated
(indeed getting nominated and winning is one of the main routes into
Academy membership).

The first problem, I agree, is insuperable....
