Is the original around? Obviously the official Chaplin Estate version is,
but I can't recall EVER hearing about a public showing of the original
release version in recent years.

I have a one-off archival 16mm preservation of what was left of an original
35mm nitrate after quite a bit of decomp had set in back in the late 50s/early
60s. It's approx. 35 minutes of the film and contains the original First
National opening credits and many of the intertitles. As the quality is
sparkling, it could be used as a starting point for a reconstruction or
restoration of the original 1921 release version.

I'd LOVE to see that, along with the rest of the extant original First
Nationals, which were discussed (a diplomatic term) quite passionately
(another diplomatic term) over at the Chaplin group. I wonder if the
archives at work on the Keystone restorations have any plans to do anything
with the original First Nationals as well...
