Shooting night exteriors in sub-freezing temps in NYC for the next
couple of weeks. I think it's going to warm up but tonight, which is
in the teens, the lcd on my 702T is becoming unreadable. Any ideas on
keeping it warm? I've taped foot-warmers to the top and bottom but
they aren't very robust - 2 hours after opening them they aren't even
warm. According to Sound Devices, the low end of the operating range
of the 702T is the high 30's F.

Arnold,

How is the LCD becoming unreadable? Slowing down so that it isn't
refreshing properly? Becoming faint?

As a quick test I threw my 744 in the freezer (figure that is 15-20F)
for about an hour. The only affect on start up was a slightly smeared
splash screen. Once I got to the main screen the slow refresh due to
the cold wasn't really noticeable.

Are you in a bag or on a cart? In a bag, the heat generated by the 7
series should be sufficient to keep the LCD warm. If it is sitting on a
cart bare, you might try wrapping it in something.

If it is becoming too faint, as Max mentioned, I would try raising the
contrast in Menu 62.

Could also be that you just have a flaky LCD.

Thanks Matt - I thought that that might be the case. :)

try place empty battery and get the recorder charge it when it works , that
would increase the heat and worm it up

Max,

The Meter statement in the manual refers to the LED's used for the level
meters, not the LCD. All LCDs are affected to some extent by the cold.

Arnold
Thanks for giving the update from Sound Devices. It's nice to have
some resolution to the problem.

BTW
Normal people believe that if it isn't broke, don't fix it. Engineers
believe that if it isn't broke, it doesn't have enough features yet.

Foot warmers work on the premise that a foot emanating 98.6 degrees
farenheit is going to be in an enclosed space with the foot warmer.
Out in the air next to your recorder it's probably not gonna happen.
If your recorder is getting too cold, try a Pelsue tent and a small
electric space heater.
