I went to this movie with some misgivings, as it was damned by local
professional critics. But then, it takes quite a bit to satisfy their jaded
taste.
Any film with Jack Black already has something going for it, and while the
movie is more mildly amusing than uproariously funny, it has its moments,
and is overall satisfying.
"Be Kind, Rewind" - with the added comma - is set in a poor neighbourhood,
of mainly blacks, as local video store struggles to survive, against the
bigger, and DVD, entity.
Threatened with demolition as a slum, its life is further complicated when
Jerry (Jack Black) gets involved with local electricity sub-station, and is
magnetised, in spectacular fashion.
The new lethal Jerry then innocently wipes all the tapes in the store,
which leaves a rental problem for friend Mike (Mos Def), left in charge
while owner Mr.Fletcher (Danny Glover) is away.
Decision to recreate every movie hired out, in a "Sweded" version, gives
us the core humour, as local girl Alma (Melonie Diaz) is drafted to assist.
I found this film quite sentimentally touching in many ways, and it
should appeal to film buffs with its references to other movies.
Spot Mia Farrow and Signorey Weaver in their respective roles, and learn
about jazz pianist, Fats Waller.
Quite an entertaining session, if you aren't too fussy.
