Post subject: Kino Expressionist July Releases
Archived from groups: alt>movies>silent (more info?)

I lurk this newsgroup often but somehow the Kino news flew under my radar.
So, I'm posting this blurb from silentera.com for any others outside the
core here incase this might be helpful to them as well. Even though the
commentary on the previous version of Dr. Mabuse, The Gambler makes it
indespensible, I also need the new version, and am intrigued by Warning
Shadows... cannot wait to see that one.

Currently, Kino has a 30% pre-order discount... much better than the 10%
offered by Amazon, and all the better to support Kino directly anyway.

from silentera.com:
Kino International has announced DVD editions of three German Expressionist
films: a new, more-complete edition of Fritz Lang's Dr. Mabuse, The Gambler
(1922), Joe May's Asphalt (1929) and Arthur Robison's Warning Shadows
(1923). All three are presented in restored editions commissioned by the
F.W. Murnau Foundation. The discs will be available 18 July 2006.

Ya know, I would much rather they started putting their efforts into
releasing long-overdue titles that have never been released, than continue
to put out second, third, and fourth editions of the same titles.

Also from Kino on July 18 is a documentary about Hitler; The Double
Headed Eagle: Hitler's Rise to Power 1918-1933. The dates imply a good
deal of the footage is from the silent era.

Well as pointed out these have not been released here before
except for Mabuse and this is a signicantly longer version

Sad fact is that the market for lesser known ( and available ) silent
films was never large and is shrinking. Since we both pay royalties
and get no subsidy it is getting harder and harder to release silent
films ( vs say the action action films). However I can promise
something
nice before the end of the year which at least as far as I know has not
been
released in the US in a decent copy

You have my word that Criterion will put out PANDORA'S BOX before the
end
of the year. We never had rights.
Realistically guys we can't put out studio stuff because it mostly
under
copyright, even PD archival stuff can be expensive to put out without
the
kind of effort I have to tell you realistically we can't devote to more
than one
or two a year ( Like the Edision set). There are still some things out
there
for us but don't expect us to put out things that either extremely
obscure
or require a huge financial committment in terms of rights or access
I think this has been pointed out before but not only is nobody
getting
rich at this, we usually struggle just to break even

Happy 4th

Now now Jessica, that isn't fair. You must tell us. :-)

Also, sorry if my post sounded ungrateful. Sometimes I just get frustrated
by the 19th version of Nosferatu and the like.

There's no reason to. Restorations from the Murnau Foundation are leaps
ahead of all previous restorations. You can usually be sure that it will
be the best version available for several years - and if a better
restoration eventually comes along it's because the Murnau Foundation
made a new one available. They are not just "yet another version",
they're basically THE version.

About "Nosferatu", they are actually preparing a new one which should be
out towards the end of this year (though that was said in 2004 and 2005
too - I do believe there's a real chance of it happening this time,
however). And that's a positive thing since the movie, despite several
goodish releases, has never really been released in a version that
matches its original form.
