Yes, I'm quite sure it has, as in, I watched it on TV a few years back
and I can't imagine what else a 1940 Warners picture would have been on. >> Stay informed about: They Knew What They Wanted (1940) |

Except for the part about never watching local TV...

Actually one of the TV stations when I was growing up in Wichita had
that too, life of the print deals (and they took very good care of
their King Kong print and may still be playing it).

Virtually every TV station which purchased the original "C&C Television
Corporation" package of RKO films in the 1950s bought them outright (other
distributors merely leased their films), and thus these stations have the
right to show these films IN PERPETUITY. They also have the choice to
replace the old worn-out prints with newer versions with the RKO logo and
original titles restored (I think there's a considerable fee for this, so
usually the stations purchase only the A-list films). Channel 7 in Chicago
is one of these stations; Channel 6 in Milwaukee is another.
THEY KNEW WHAT THEY WANTED has been shown on TCM, and was seen on AMC before
that. Evidently, only the C&C version is currently available, so the prints
aren't all that good.

Sorry, wrong again, Mike. Our Vines was a 1945 feature from MGM.
(Just a look at the cast list, with Margaret O'Brien, James Craig, Sara
Haden, Frances Gifford,
Louis Jean Heydt, etc. would have confirmed that.....all Metro contract
players.)

It's absolutely RKO, which means you could have seen it on local
Channel 7 in Chicago, Mike, while TCM may not have rights to show it.
Channel 7 is one of the few stations that has rights to show RKO
features in perpetuity given a weird contract that RKO did in the 50s.
It's possible that 7 still has a print and TCM has no rights to show
it, given that their rights on a lot of RKO features have expired. I'm
not certain this is true, but it's possible...

Everything you say is right here except "Virtually every station..."
Many of them did not. Someone once quoted the numbers here, but you
could either buy them outright or for a certain period. I know the
stations you mention did this, and I'm also sure that there is one
somewhere in Texas that did this, but I'm not sure how many others did.
There were a number down here in these parts that just leased the C&C
prints, and they were gone by 1980.

Hmmm, too bad. The 16mm I just watched is pretty good. What an odd
film. Too bad Garson Kanin didn't direct more.

Yeah, but if it had been made in 1940 with Robinson, it WOULD have been
Warners... (that's a joke but you can see how my memory got all tangled
up...) those two movies have always confused me, probably because
Robinson was in the first version of They Knew What They Wanted (A Lady
to Love, 1930). Anyone seen THAT-- directed by Sjostrom no less? >> Stay informed about: They Knew What They Wanted (1940) |
