Group,

Kodak is planning to lay off 23000 workers and close manufacturing
facilities and dispose of surplus equipment and close down weak product
lines. The direction will be digital.

Any rumors on how this will affect Super 8 or Kodachrome 40?

Kodak lately has an interesting strategy of focusing on making a better
progress in the digital world at what they see is the inevitable cost of
gradually abandoning their film business.

I say \"interesting\" because Fuji, their chief competitor, has just
reiterated their commitment to film while already having a digital
strategy that is more robust and convincing than Kodak\'s.

So Fuji is successful doing both without making a big fuss about it, while
Kodak CEO is haphazardly \"jumping on the digital bandwagon\".

While digital is a one-time sale for equipment (have you seen successful
Kodak *digital* consumables? Any Kodak digital consumables?), film is a
consumable itself you get to sell medium, chemicals, processing service
etc. You could make money doing digital but you got to be DAMN good
innovating at increasingly cut-throat prices to entice the consumers to
keep upgrading and upgrading to maintain sustainable income.

Hey John:
I think your numbers are a little off. Kodak said that it plans to
lay off
15,000 workers over the next three years. It is most likely that they
will be
in areas responsible for the construction of APS and disposable cameras
and
such. From what I've heard recently, Super 8 is GROWING. Yes, I know its
hard
to believe, but Super 8 is making a big comeback due in part to eBay and
the
internet and great websites such as this one. Anyways, I also heard that
Kodak
plans on shifting some of its production to China. This is very
disappointing,
but completely in line with the path that many other American companies
have
taken. Moovie film in general looks to be in a much better position than
still
film and medical film, both of which have been becoming increasingly
digitized
at an astonishing rate.
