Just seen this film again and I wondered...is the initial orgy scene, with
the guy in red and the girls all kneeling and the dark chanting etc etc all
made up or is based on something...er, like a real classy orgy?

Just wondered.

And is that chanting the music shown as "Requiem K626"?

It's based on the fact that Kubrick didn't get out much.

It was some time since I saw the film but I heard an interview with
Jocelyn Pook, the composer of the original music who said the vocals
were played backwards but I can't remember exactly where they came
from anymore, I believe it was some thing balkan, possibly the
Bulgarian Womens Choir. On the sound track cd the track is caled
"Masked Ball" (if we're talking about the same music).

If it sounded like Mozart, it could be. K626 is Mozart's Requiem.

It's been a while since I've seen EWS, but as I recall, the only place
in which the Mozart Requiem is played is the scene in which Tom Cruise
goes into the restaurant and discovers that he's actually been in
England all the time that he thought he was in New York.

The chanting music played during the orgy was written by Jocelyn Pook,
I assume specifically for the film.

It's a typical Hollywood casting call.

The orgy scene in Eyes Wide Shut for me is the creepiest part of the
film. It's where the power of the elite becomes visible (at least in
the mind of Cruise' character), and the sheer decadence of it all is
overwhelming. It's a maddening scene, I think. It makes me angry at
the decadence and power of the twisted rich. And if you think about it,
it's very introspective on Cruise' part, since he himself is a member of
that elite. The film is sort of a self-analysis, which is the key to
understanding it, I think.

Kubrick's films are interesting in that if you approach them with an
open mind you are well-rewarded. On the other hand, if you go in
expecting genius, you will be disappointed.
