FOR 2004 LAST REMAINING SEATS CLASSIC FILM SERIES
Eighteenth Season Returns to the Days of the Silver Screen with an Exciting
Selection of Black & White Classics
WHAT: Last Remaining Seats, a series of classic films and live
entertainment
hosted in the beautiful historic movie palaces of Los
Angeles and
surrounding areas. Benefiting the Los Angeles
Conservancy, the series
presents classic films as they were meant to be
enjoyed-surrounded by
the lavish settings in which they were originally
showcased and
accompanied by vintage newsreels, cartoon shorts, live
performances,
and onstage interviews. This year's films feature
silver screen legends
such as Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe, Clark
Gable,
Claudette Colbert, Gloria Stuart, Dick Powell, Adolphe
Menjou, Dolores
Del Rio, Marlene Dietrich, and Anna May Wong.
WHERE/WHEN: Wednesdays, June 2-July 7, 2004 at 8:00 p.m.
June 2 - Some Like It Hot, Los Angeles Theatre, 615 So. Broadway. Tony
Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe star in this zany 1959 Billy Wilder
comedy set in the 1920s.
June 9 - Sunrise, Orpheum Theatre, 842 So. Broadway. Considered one of the
greatest silent films ever produced, the beautiful and evocative silent
masterpiece, Sunrise, won Academy Awards for "Unique and Artistic Picture,"
Best Actress, and Best Cinematography.
June 16 - Gold Diggers of 1935, Alex Theatre, 216 North Brand Boulevard,
Glendale. An extravagant Busby Berkeley film, Gold Diggers of 1935 stars
Gloria Stuart, Dick Powell, and Adolphe Menjou.
June 23 - La otra, (Spanish-English subtitles), Orpheum Theatre, 842 So.
Broadway.
Dolores Del Rio stars in this 1946 atmospheric thriller, which is deemed
number eight on the list of top 100 Mexican films of all time. This evening
is co-presented by the Latin American Cinemateca of Los Angeles.
June 30 - It Happened One Night, Los Angeles Theatre, 615 So. Broadway.
Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert star in this smart 1934 romantic comedy
that won every Academy Award for which it was nominated.
July 7 - Shanghai Express, Orpheum Theatre, 842 So. Broadway. Marlene
Dietrich and Anna May Wong star in this part thriller, part romantic drama.
WHY: To bring attention to the beautiful historic movie palaces of
Los Angeles and surrounding areas, particularly those in the Broadway
Historic Theater District, and to benefit the Los Angeles Conservancy's
preservation work.
The Los Angeles Conservancy is a nonprofit membership organization that
works through education and advocacy to recognize, preserve, and revitalize
the historic architectural and cultural resources of Los Angeles County.
Its 8,500 members make it the largest organization of its kind in the
nation.

Sunrise (Fox, 1927)
A beautiful and evocative silent masterpiece, Sunrise won the Academy Award
for "Unique and Artistic Picture" and has come to be considered one of the
greatest silent films ever produced. The film's star, Janet Gaynor, also won
for Best Actress and the Cinematography award went to Charles Rosher and
Karl Struss. The first American film by German director F.W. Murnau
(Nosferatu, The Last Laugh), Sunrise tells a simple story of betrayal and
redemption with subtlety and lyric beauty.
Live On Stage:

original score, compiled by Hugo Riesenfeld and adapted by Robert Israel.
