Every time I see Alien I get to think about those "landing lights" that are in
not-so-very straight lines under the Nostromo when they touch down.
Who put them there? A drunk in-term? Looks really odd.

They could never get them right as much as they tried, Ridley was aware of it >> Stay informed about: Landing lights |

Huh? They couldn't attach lights in straight lines??

yes, it does sound confusing, but I haven't found an explanation >> Stay informed about: Landing lights |

Then I shall try :-)
If they couldn't attach the lights in a straight line on the model, maybe
they couldn't attach lights on a straight line on the 'real' Nostromo, and
why should they? Do landing lights have to be in a straight line? Is it a
design requirement?

Yes, it is. Otherwise, you'll be laughed at at the "Spacecraft Designer
Convention".
Since there seems to be no reasons for so many small lights, why even bother
trying to put them in lines? Why not attachs six medium-sized lamps instead of
50 small ones?
It's stupid! :)

For purposes of symmetry, yes >> Stay informed about: Landing lights |

If they want *me* to get onto their spaceship, they'd better be
sufficiently good at design and engineering that they can at least
line some lights up!

Not a movie but a series - Firefly doesn't have sound in space, and its
effect is great. J Michael Straskchkchckinksky (sp? :-)) or Babylon 5
explained sound effects in space best as there purely as an aid to the
audience and to be considered as if part of the background music.
