Hiring attractive actors to play nerds seems wrong to me, its one of
those easy get out of jail things like an actor of normal intelligence
playing a retarded person.

because, of course, there are so many unattractive actors who get
leading roles in movies.

Check out _Oasis_ though, the two lead performances are quite
remarkable.

There are some, off the top of my head current ugly actors that get or
have gotten lead roles Philip Seymour Hoffman, Adrien Brody, Steve
Buscemi, Chris Cooper, Maggie Gyllenhaal, John C. Reilly, Danny
DeVito.

You find Maggie Gyllenhaal unattractive?

interesting.

And when has Steve Buscemi ever had the lead in a movie he didn't
direct?

Of course I do. Talented actress but she looks like Droopy Dog from
the old MGM cartoons http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5-6ElPSjc0
and apparently I'm not the only one it was the subject of a sequence
on a recent episode of Family Guy.

There was the recent "Delirious" and he's had the co-lead in a few
films.

Agreed. OASIS is amazing as are all of Lee Chang-Dong's film
(incidentally, his latest film SECRET SUNSHINE is the S.Korean
submission for Best Foreign Language Film) and the two leads are
incredible. Of course, Sol Kyung-Gu always radiates that animal
intensity in everything he does (RIKIDOZAN, PUBLIC ENEMY and another
Lee Chang-Dong film, PEPPERMINT CANDY), but the acting of Moon So-ri
was sublime, as good--if not better than--DiCaprio in GILBERT GRAPE.

(if you haven't seen all of Lee Chang-Dong's films, definitely find
them and watch them!)

An actor of subnormal intelligence playing a genius--now, *that's*
something I'd pay good money to see! I'm serious.
