It's well known that Stan Laurel was second to none in his veneration
of Chaplin's artistry.

In addition, Laurel had the unique perspective of being Chaplin's
understudy in the Karno troupe, as well as being his roommate
on the tours of America, etc.

On a new website, lettersfromstan.com, a collection of letters
from Laurel to fans and friends, we find this excerpt:

"Oct.2nd.'57

Dear Ed [Patterson]:-

I agree that Chaplin doesn't have any [trouble] - financially,
but nevertheless, he is a very unhappy man, & mentally
troubled, you can rest assured, success & worldly goods
do'nt (sic) insure happiness & content."

An observation out of context, from a guy who hadn't had
regular contact with Chaplin for 43 years, but for what it's worth...

Chaplin, a very unhappy man? Well, considering that the reviews for
A KING IN NEW YORK were rolling in at that point...

But for the most part I'd guess he was happier in those 1950s-1960s
years than he'd been during his last decade in America.

I always liked the story Stan told about
dropping by Chaplin's house sometime
after the war and the two of them had tea
and reminenced the afternoon away.
Gone were any feelings of rivalry and it
sounds like two old actors sharing tales
they both remembered.

Keaton told a similar tale about Chaplin
and so long as there was no movie project
involved (which precludes their time spent
on "Limelight) or the need for ego one-upmanship
he said that Charlie was capable of letting his
hair down and be very good company.

My subjective take on the quote is that Laurel was commenting
on Chaplin's general temperament as he knew it during the time
they lived in close quarters - it fits in with other assessments he
made
of Chaplin as brooding, moody, eccentric - and likely of a generally
more
serious frame of mind than Laurel himself was.
