Dang, I look away from the group for a couple of days,
and all of sudden here are all these questions!!! :-)
When I first saw Alien, my immeadiate thought was that the
layer was "protecting" the eggs. Not from something getting
to the eggs, but in a "preservation" type of way. I hate to use
the word "refrigerator" because that makes it sound kind of
hooky, but that's the principle I'm trying to suggest. It was
"storing" the eggs in a "suitable" environment so that they
didn't deteriorate -- they were kept fresh.
Whether or not the SJs were using them as bioweapons
<shudder> or just trying to protect samples or keeping
religious materials viable or whatever, it would make sense.
Later on, I thought it could just be a warning system similar
to lasers we use to protect our houses and such. It would let
the SJs know if someone was down there messing with the
eggs, or if a facehugger had emerged and was roaming around.
Or it could've just been a really cool effect created by a light
for the egg chamber! ;-)
That's why I love Alien: so many great little mysteries! So many
possible solutions.
Have a great day!
