Archived from groups: rec>arts>movies>production>sound (more info?)

greetings,

i'm a bit confused on the cable output options for use with the Lectro
100 rx.

i'm going into either a SD302 or a PVV3 betacam deck and occasionally a
DVX100 mini-dv cam (with XLRs).

the MC55 says:
3.5mm mono mini plug to XLR male; 15" long; converts unbalanced line
level to balanced mic level; 45dB attenuator; built-in caps bypass
phantom power

the MC100XLR says:
3.5mm mono plug to male XLR unbal; pin 2 (+) with pins 1 and 3
jumpered; 100 ohm resistor

don't i want the MC55s - if only as it gets the signal to a BALANCED
one?

i can't think of where the MC100s would come into play as they are
UNbalanced.

thanks
brian

I question how they get a balanced output from an unbalanced input.

Hi Eric,
It doesn't provide a true balanced output and we need to make that
clear on the site. The description is simply wrong. It is a psuedo
balanced resistive circuit in that induced common mode noise will
appear equally on pins 2 and 3 and the impedance of 2 and 3 are equal
to ground. It is designed to get the 100 output into a balanced mic
level input. I thought there were schematics of the cables somewhere on
the site but I can't find it today. I will get the description changed
Monday and see about getting links to schematics. That would definitely
make it easier for customers to roll their own, which is dandy with us.
Best Regards,
Larry Fisher

Would that all vendors had such an enlightened policy.
Thanks, Larry. Thats the kind of cooperation and respect
for customers that makes some vendors clearly superior.

Use the cable that gives you the "balanced" mic level output.

Hi Brian,
For short signal runs, balanced or unbalanced is not critical, the one
exception being when two different units are powered from a noisy
power supply. The balanced configuration helps eleminate ground loops.
I am not totally familiar with the inoputs on the various devices you
mentioned but I think the strong, unbalanced line level signal of the
MC100XLR input would be better than the attenuated balanced mic level
signal of the MC55. If the DVX100 is mic level only, then the MC55 is
the choice.

The only reason for the MC55's existence is to go into cameras that
only have a mic level input. Some other readers here may know more
about the various devices than I do.
Best Regards,
Larry Fisher

Yes, the DVX-100 and DVX-100A do line level nicely. If the camera's
level controls are at about 2:00pm you should get a good
noise/distortion tradeoff.
