Hi all.
Maybe Larry at Lectrosonics could answer this one. I am using the
Lectrosonics SM transmitter with a 411a receiver and love it's size and
convenience etc. But recently I have noticed during scenes with very
quiet backgrounds an unexceptable amount of hiss in the audio channel.
I am using the SM with a Countryman B-6 and don't experience this with
either the 200 or 400 transmitters. Are there other SM users with
similar problems ?

Regards,
Richard

Thanks for the Sunday reply. First these are all brand new B-6's and
they are wired to work with both the SM and other lectrosonic
transmitters. Secondly the audio level on the SM is set to "34" in a
range of "20 to 40". By the way how does the audio level numbering on
the SM relate to the 200 or 400 transmitters?

Regards,
Richard

Hi Richard,
There is no easy correspondence in settings and that's why I
recommended using the red limit light scheme for getting the gains set
for comparison purposes. The B6 is not as quiet as some other popular
small mics since it has an even tinier diaphragm but that only
explains its noise floor, not the differences in noise floors between
transmitters. Another variable is the noise reduction setting of your
receivers. The 411's have three settings and the 200 series is fixed
at a "full" setting. If you are using one receiver for all the
comparisons, that blows that variable out of the water though. If you
are using different receivers, then use the "full" setting on all if
the 200 is in the comparison.

The guy that knows the 400's better than anyone else here, is David
Thomas (DT) and you are of course welcome to call him.
Best Regards,
Larry Fisher

I had the same sort of problem problem the other night with my PinMics
the other night. Using several of my 411a Lectrosonics systems. I
couldn't figure out the exact cause. I tried several combinations of
transmitters and mics. All with the same high noise floor. I put it
down to cooling of the equipment or the high humidity in the cool night
exterior air.
Strange.
Another few nights of Night exterior work may reveal more about this.

Once while using a 411 the T Power switch somehow got turned on. It
caused excessive noise. Is it possible that you accidentally turned on
the phantom or T power to that channel?

Larry,
I want to thank you and Dave Thomas for the excellant help in SOLVING
the SM hiss issue....It was the wiring of the Countryman B-6's. I had
the correct wiring done, with the resistors suggested in your wiring
plot. Voila, no hiss and working like a charm. Dave called me back in
less than 10 minutes after leaving a voice mail message today.

Great customer support, thanks again.
