Larry,
If you're lurking around these parts this weekend I have some questions
for you:
I'm aware that one of the differences between the UM200B and the UM200C
is the point at which the Red (limit) LED fires. On the older unit I
understand it's about 10dB below limiting and on the newer one it's
right at the limiting point. At least that's how I remember it.
My first question is, "What is the firing point of the red limit LED on
a UH200D?"
I might need to use the UH200D as the second channel for a camera hop on
Monday and would like to have a better feel how I should set it up
relative to a UM200C. I realize that the UH200D has a fixed hi-pass
filter at about 70Hz which I understand is equivalent to the middle
position on the variable hi-pass on the UM200C, but, I'd like to get the
gain structure on the UH200D as close to how I have the UM200C set as I can.
With a "stick mic" I've just always set it so that the LED seldom fires
-- pretty much how I set a bodypack.
I have five receivers, four bodypacks, and a plugon, and I was initially
planning to use the plugon in place of a third bodypack by using a lav
adapter (that would free up two bodypacks for the camera hop) but I
learned today that I'll be micing some very young kids and I think, in
that case, the plugon will be way too bulky.
I'm attentuating the signal (from my SD302) going to the plugon by
around 35dB -- that seems to be about the right amount (the gain knob is
just above the third notch, counting the fully attenuated position as
"1") am I likely to overload at that setting? My plugon had the
balanced update done which, if I'm not mistaken, lowers the input gain a
bit.
Thank you for any, and all, info.

john the 302 has full scale ton ( wile you are in the menu mod , switch the
tone on ) , you can calibrate the uh input to the point you will hear the
limiting happens , if I remember correctly the uh 200d red light working
as the 200 b and comes 10 db before it actually happens
so with normal work when you hit the +10 dbu you certainly will be on the
safe side , open your limiters for +14/16 and you will never reach the tx
limiting

Thanks, Oleg. Good suggestion -- as usual.
I'm curious if the modification they made also has any affect on LED
level. The one noticable result is that the plugon has less gain. As I
understand it, the mod is to make it function more like the newer units.
It's supposed to make it work better with some balanced mics such as
the Schoeps.

Thanks for the help Oleg.
John,
The modification (adding a series resistor to pin 3) will only affect
the gain of mics that have a fully floating output such as a dynamic
mic. The Schoeps and some others look like a balanced but center
tapped output.
The 200D has an improved limiter and the LED's are under
microprocessor control and were setup to cause users to operate closer
to full modulation. The gain will be set higher to get the same
modulation indication as on the older units. There was less of a sonic
penalty on the D for operating closer to or slightly in actual
limiting.
