Archived from groups: alt>movies>silent (more info?)

Well, I got the new Legen DVD of MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS. Mostly
good news. First, both the B&W and Colorized versions have the
ORIGINAL main title BABES IN TOYLAND. Legend replaced the visual-only
on the MPPDA certificate (which is scored) and, on the colorized put
"Legend Films Presents March of the Wooden Soldiers" and on the B&W put
"Legend Films Presents Another Classic Film Presentation" (or something
like that). The original scoring remains and then goes into the
original NRA-MGM Roaring Lion logo.

The print quality is excellent but appears to be from a composite of
sources. When we switch to Billy Bletcher blowing his whistle there is
a slight improvement in resolution. But the entire titles and
storybook opening are, I believe, from 35mm (unless I don't recognize
my own 16mm footage!!). The bulk of the feature is probably from a
mint Lippert print. There is another slight quality change (back to
same as opening) at the final canon blast and end title. But the end
title has the Goldwyn superimposition so it must have come from the
1991 colorization. The strange thing is that the "Go To Sleep Slumber
Deep" footage looks like it came from a 16mm Erko print. I wasn't able
to compare this to the Goldwyn-Goodtimes DVD.

The reduction print of the original trailer is there; so is a good
color print of the short version of TREE IN A TEST TUBE.

Overall, this is a disc well worth getting.
