What did you guys think of this? I saw it for the first time last
night, and thought it was okay (maybe a little long)... certainly I
enjoyed the new moments of "Vagabond" and "Adventurer" outtakes someone
allowed us (sigh). I also felt a little uneasy about the audience it
was aiming for... it seemed a little too general for hard-core fans,
but if it was intended for people who aren't acquainted with Chaplin, I
think they didn't show enough of his actual work (which speaks far more
for him than any bunch of talking heads could).

Speaking of talking heads - I also couldn't help thinking how nice it
would have been to have had some of the people interviewed in this
documentary to have been involved with the Mk2 series instead of the
people who WERE. Geez, wouldn't it have been nice to have a couple of
Chaplin children doing commentary for "Limelight," for instance? Or
Robinson annotating the First Nationals... or insights from Marcel
Marceau or Woody Allen or Martin Scorsese for some of the other films
(although Woody came off like such a grouchy old jerk I'm not sure I
would have wanted to see more of him).

That was the problem I had with it. Why even bother with this guy in a
celebration of Chaplin's work if he doesn't particularly like it? It would
be like interviewing me about the merits of Eminem.

I'm a little surprised you didn't mention the man who produced the
documentary, Richard Schickel, who has been writing widely about film since the
sixties and directed the groundbreaking THE MEN WHO MADE THE MOVIES for PBS
during the early seventies. (He also has a 90-minute doc on Martin Scorscese
scheduled for Turner Classic Movies next month).
