Good question of which I have no answer. I have never seen it offered
on TCM cable and except for a local PBS station airing it without
commercials, I've only seen it cut up and filled with commercials on
AMC.

The same is true with the 70 mm version of John Wayne's classic "The Big
Trail" available on DVD & VHS, but not in wide screen as has been shown
repeatedly on AMC cable. Since it's just about the first wide scree
ever made and the print has been preserved, you'd think that it would be
available.

Fox Movie Channel has been showing it regularly lately.

As luck would have it (I've been hunting this one, too!) Amazon has just
listed the Big Trail on DVD. I noticed a bunch of John Wayne stuff coming
out on DVD in the last few months. (McLintock, etc.) I'd imagine the Big
Trail would available at stores, but for sure Amazon has it! ($13.48). I
can't tell if it's in widescreen or not, though. No luck on Lifeboat. Know
where I could find a copy of El Cid? :) Hope that helps.

Checking the Amazon site, I see that "The Big Trail" is still only
available in 'pan & scan' and not wide-screen. At least that's what it
says in the details about the 'new' DVD.

It's not pan-and-scan. According to allmovie.com:

"Each scene was lensed twice, once in 35-millimeter and then in the 65-mm
"Fox Grandeur" wide-screen process."

The DVD is the 35mm version. Why they didn't include both versions on the
disc (or just the 65mm version if they were only going to include one), I'll
never understand.

At least the films are available, but the studios really should do better
with the quality. It's a shame some of these great old Westerns (or any
movie, for that matter) didn't get a well-deserved remastering and
restoration. I'm thinking about the great job Warner Bros. did with The
Searchers, for example. You get such a feel for John Ford's love of the
landscape.

You can buy an Oriental, perhaps pirated version on
eBay. Mine certainly looks commercially produced and the quality is
not bad.

So there is no misunderstanding, 'allmovie.com' talks about how the film
was made and NOT what is on the DVD!!! Everyone that I have seen talk
about the DVD say that it is simply pan & scan (except for the
introduction that shows clips in wide-screen just as the VHS tape does).
Rumor has it that someday it will be released in the 70 MM format
(perhaps even in 2005), but I wouldn't bet on it.
I already have a widescreen version on DVD, but only by recording it
with a DVD recorder and then removing the endless commercials when it
aired on AMC last year.

With tandem wagons pulled by oxen or the paddlewheeler billowing black
smoke in the background, it's a wonderful film to see in wide screen or
even in pan & scan.

When it was made, the filming was done in both standard 35 MM and the 70
MM 'Grandeur' simultaneously. That is historical fact and not what is
currently available on DVD.

Vic,

Do you remember who you ordered from? or what company produced the title?
I just received an Asian version in which the voice and picture go out of
sync half way through the movie.

Thanks,

Chris Lilly

I have a copy of 'Rebecca' that does that too ... and, I think, one of
'Notorious'.
Actually, I purchased the Wrong Men and Notorious Women box-set of
DVD's last year and the DVD of 'Rebecca' does the same thing again. I
get the feeling that whatever idiot supervised its transfer started it
going, saw that it was alright and then left it alone for the remaining
hour and a half, missing the jump into "non-synchronised sound" halfway
through the film.

I've been told that players should be cleaned (using the disc made for
that purpose) ever 20 hours of play time. The disc has little brushes
on it. I clean mine about every 100 hours.
I also have discs that skip in my player, but play fine in my DVD
recorder?

Chirs:

I am sorry to hear of your problem. My copy is quite acceptable and
has no sync problems.

Unfortunately, I bought my Asian copy of "Lifeboat" used from a
University Prof. from a major US school. He claimed to be selling off
his excess videos and based upon the other sales that I could see he
was making at the time, I have no reason to doubt him. He was not
selling multiple copies of anything and is not lising anything now.

However, I have bought many Asian import DVDs and had them shipped to
Canada in the past. The experience has generally been good from the
Asian sellers directly from China. I have also had good experiences
buying from Asian resellers in Toronto, Canada who had the disks
shipped directly from China. Delivery sometimes has been slow but
always within 3 weeks or so. If you are in the US, perhaps there may
be greater delays because of security issues. The last time, I
purchased from China, the speed was incredible as the disk arrived in
6 days.

Surprisingly enough, I have had bad experiences similar to the
problems you describe buying Asian products from sellers who were
located in the US and the UK although the locations may have nothing
to do with it.

In one case, I received a VCD and not a DVD and it had sync problems
later in the movie like you describe. The picture quality was poor.
When I reread the seller's listing, the fine print stated quite
clearly that the disk was a VCD and not a DVD. All I can say is read
the listing CAREFULLY.

In the other case, buying a Asian video from a large volume seller
from Texas, I received a copy of Vertigo, with excellent professional
looking packaging and disk appearance. It was shipped from Texas. In
that case, the eBay listing clearly stated that the Asian subtitles
could be removed but while I have done this with many other disks, I
could not remove them with this one. The picture quality and sound
were excellent and comparable to the Universal original as I later
purchased it at an exellent price and sent the Asian one to another
"Hitchcock" friend as a gift.

Getting Back to LIFEBOAT.

The DVD case, does not list a company. It states "The Best Movie
Collection" and has reasonably professional looking box and DVD.
The DVD and case have a item number EDVD-6619 which no doubt is the
catalogue or product number. Looking at the DVD I see the fine print
states "EVERVISION Corp. No. 67 Kung Kuang Road, Taipei, R.O.C.
Telephone = (02)28969279 Fax (02)28969245

I did a search on eBay and the copies of Lifeboat currently being sold
are not generally packaged the way the one I bought was. The only one
I could find that looks like mine is eBay item number 6380918927.

If you do a search on eBay and enter that number in the search box,
you should be able to see the picture of a DVD similar to mine.

I am curious to know if your DVD looks like mine or like the other
ones currently listed? An example of the other ones is eBay item
number 6380525898.

Best wishes,

Vic Evans (marmalade_man[NOSPAM]@yahoo.com

Interesting. I was told by a DVD repair guy that you should never use
those products. I have never had a problem with any of my players.
Perhaps my friend was just trying to generate more work for his repair
business.

Thanks for your reply, Vic. I appreciate the effort you put into it. My
DVD was packaged as the later example you referenced (though this was not my
seller). I will try to order your version.

Thanks,

Chris
