I was in the states when this came out in mid-November, and even they
thought it was fairly stinky.

why is it that some films that nobody really likes end up in the running for

Because the oscars are run by luvvies for luvvies. As if an actor actually
does anything remotely USEFUL, no matter how good it might be.
