Hello fellow sound mixers--

While at The Tape warehouse in Atlanta, GA yesterday, my friend and
sales rep Brian Breed told me that he's having a great deal of trouble
locating the Maxell DVD-RAM discs. (either spindles or boxes).

His Maxell rep told him that Maxell is discontinuing the production of
DVD-RAMs.

Panasonic supposedly makes a 5x, but Brian has only ever been able to
find 3x from them.

Any thoughts?

Either we rally behind Sound Devices, Zaxcom, Aaton, etc. and get
Maxell to reconsider their decision of perhaps we need to start
looking at another type of inexpensive deliverable that will work with
our recorders?

The Aaton Cantar optical burner can handle cd/dvd-r/dvd+r/dvd+r double
sided in addition to dvd-ram. I think the drives that the other
companies use could burn alternatives if the software was updated to
allow it.

interesting, wonder if I should start stock piling! its funny because
it took the
last few years to educate and convince post/telecine houses to get on
board
with DVDRAM, guess the burning options will need updating....

That's too bad, kind of a problem. I always have found 5x disks
worked better for real-time write from SD recorders in the XLDVDRAM
drive..... I did have some Pana 5x disks for awhile, they worked
fine.

I hope this isn't true but if it is we will adapt! I personally keep
waiting for the announcement of the CF demise. I think the standard is
easily going to be SD or USB thumb drives. I currently have the DV824,
PD606 and PD204. All of which can deliver CD and DVD-R if you can
afford the burn time, though its not a simultaneous burn like the RAM.
PD606 can also file transfer to USB thumb drive but not external HDD
without a computer. Adding a file transfer before delivery is
acceptable though not ideal.

The first to produce a multitrack recorder on SD wins my gold bullion.
Boom Boom!

Good Luck
Eric

I have been using this adapter:

http://www.delkin.com/products/adapters/sd-to-cf/sd-to-cf.html

with a 16gb hoodman sdhc card and a sandisk firewire reader. If the
adapter fits into your SD, it might work (it's a type II device).
