I hope someone can help me here, this has been bugging me for some time...
I've been a Chaplin fan for many years now. When I first saw Modern Times,
the famous scene in which the tramp is employed as a singing waiter seemed
oddly familiar to me.
I'm sure I had previously seen in my childhood another film on television,
black and white but a 'proper' talkie (I think) featuring a similar scene
where the leading character is employed as a singing waiter, has the words
of his song written on a piece of paper which he promptly loses just as he
has to go on and sing, and he has to make the words up as he goes along.
Now knowing the way the memory works I realise that maybe it was Modern
Times I recalled seeing, just in a rather warped way, but does anyone know
of a later film which may have used the same idea? My memory of it is very
vague now because I was very young at the time, but in my mind the film had
a 1950s look to it and the lead character was more of a Jerry Lewis or
Norman Wisdom type. I'm sure if it had been Modern Times then I would have
recognised and remembered it as being Charlie Chaplin.
Any help appreciated!
