"Ten From Tour Show of Shows" (US - 1973)
I needed a laugh tonight and this was the right film for laughter.
Classic bits from
Max Liebman's "Your Show of Shows" on TV from 1950 to 1954 starring Sid
Caesar, Imogene Coca,
Howard Morris, Carl Reiner and Louis Nye. Performed live in front of a
live studio audience.
The old black and white kinescopes are a bit hoary today, but the
material is still
hilarious and never equaled in some 60 years. Laugh till you cry.

The way Caesar did his pseudo-French, pseudo-Russian, pseudo-Japanese,
& pseudo-German was brilliant!

If you have the opportunity to see the film "My Favorite Year" (US - 1982)
you can play the match game. Joe Bologna is (of course) Sid Caesar.
Adolph Green
is Max Liebman. Peter O'toole is Errol Flynn. It gets a bit harder with
some of the smaller
roles.
I worked in television from the mid '50s to the early '60s. I know the
technical tricks,
but the SOS stock company bordered on genius. Too bad they are gone.

If you don't count Sid Caesar and Carl Reiner. Louis Nye and Howard Morris
were friends of mine, and they were just as funny in person. Very sweet
men, both of them.

Wikipedia (for better or worse) lists Carsar and Reiner as graduates of the
Borscht Belt. I wonder if this is correct - I have never thought of
either of them
as BB comedians.

Mark Linn-Baker is Mel Brooks.

Is Baker Mel Brooks or Woody Allen who also worked on the show at this time?

Wow, MFY must have been on recently, because three forums I go to are
talking about the film. I remember seeing the trailers for the film when
I was a kid; they all focused on the bit where O'Toole is carted up the
stairs in a dolly. Funny, yes, but not as funny as Jessica Harper
botching that joke: "Will you help me? Because I have a duck on my
head." Lainie Kazan was also terrific.

Well, I own a copy of the film - and it is one of my favorites. I am
still not sure if
the Linn-Baker role is modeled after Woody Allen or Mel Brooks.

_Decline of the American Empire_ (Quebec 1984)
I had seen this one in a small-screen theatre as a youngster and thought
it was great, but only because the local intelligentsia praised it
silly. Now, I see it as a talky and static bit of self-indulgence. The
film is about a winter country retreat where four couples working as
academics meet to spend a weekend, as they do every year. Lots of
conversation ensues and some ugly truths are revealed. The whole thing
begins and ends in the middle.
This film dates back to a time when serious filmmakers made movies about
things such as two men having dinner (_My Dinner With Andre_, 1982).
Although I don't mind realistically nonviolent films--I far prefer _The
Good Shepherd_ to any Bond or Bourne movie--these '80s gabfests were
insubstantial, silly, and shallow in their approach to issues of the
human spirit. Good riddance to that phase of filmmaking.

Brooks. Allen wasn't the jumping-on-the-table type.

But who does Jessica Harper play?

The first movie(s) you watched this year? - 2046--like In the Mood for Love, it's as meticulous, obsessive and as boring at times as a Bryan Ferry solo record but perfect viewing for the early hours of the new year. Caught Infernal Affairs 2 earlier in the day and Carina Lau's a terrific actress...
