I saw this film for the first time day before yesterday and was greatly
impressed by Robert Montgomery's performance. It impressed me, too,
that his character, Danny, exhibited most of the traits that today we
associate with psychopaths: charming veneer, lack of empathy with
others, absence of a conscience, tendency to live in a self-constructed
reality, tendency to keep a "souvenir" of his murders (in his case, a
hatbox containing something rather grisly). Obviously, this type has
been around for many centuries, but it was still interesting to see how
much Danny resembled Ted Bundy and other such killers. The only aspect
that wasn't taken into account was the sexual one. I suspect this had
to do with censorship or perhaps a certain squeamishness about going
into that area.

The film also succeeded in making Rosalind Russell look like a frump.
Quite a feat.

Robert Montgomery also had the most convincing Welsh accent I've heard from
a Hollywood actor. Was he of Welsh descent does anyone know?
